Default 70-76 Firebird Trans Am AM FM radio

1970 to 1976 AM FM complete radio

accidently listed this as a 77 but it's the earlier version. Go see this thread for description and pictures.

Technically, this 1976 radio is externally identical to the 1977. However, this will not work in 1978-81 Firebirds.

The Delco logo was cursive on the 1970-1975 radios.

One more thing...is it stereo or mono?

Don’t know how to tell if it’s stereo or mono

the easiest way to tell:

stereo = has "red dot" on FM dial face

mono = no "red dot"

it looks like the id tag is still there, maybe you can share a larger picture of it so that members might be able to glean information from it.

the radio interchange is 1970-1977;
The radio's became larger (read: taller face) in 1978, this is why dashboards are 1970-1977 & 1978-1981.

The "block" lettering was used on latter radios and refers wholly to the "Delco" on the dial face, it looks like this:

(it's on the upper left side; also note the "red dot" in the centre of the FM dial face.)

This is the "script" lettering was used on earlier radios and refers wholly to the "Delco" on the dial face, it looks like this:

(it's on the upper right side; also note the "red dot" in the centre of the FM dial face.)

I am unclear on exactly when the changeover happened on the AM/FM radios from script to block, but am pretty sure that 1976 & 1977 radios used block, while 1970-1974 used script;
The 'block script' AM/FM radios are more plentiful, because AM/FM radios were a more common option in the later 1970's.

Unlike the AM/FM radios, the AM radios appeared to use script through to 1977.

While on the subject of confusion surrounding second gen Firebird radios, one of my small pet peeves is the radio block off plate currently offered by repop houses;
It's labelled as 1970-1981 which has to be wrong;
The few pictures I've seen of one installed in a car makes me believe the pattern part was from a post-1977 car, as it appears to be too tall for a 1970-1977 radio opening - I can only surmise this further confuses people who don't know the dash and or radio differences.

This AM radio is in a 1977 Esprit, and has the block logo..

wow!!
I have NEVER come across that, and I have been looking at 70-77 Firebird AM radios for over twenty years!!?!
(granted I haven't paid quite as much attention for the last five or six years)

I'm not doubting that could have been a factory install like that, but I'm also wondering if that radio has a replacemnt face...

Possible?...absolutely.

Likely?...not leaning in that direction.

The pic came from this ad. The car seems to be a total survivor Esprit..

very cool!
I'd drive the crap out of that car!!

one of the few years that an Esprit could come with a 350/4bbl, and that final one at that.

Here's another 1977 AM radio with the block logo that a board member is peddling..

I received the radio today! Great job on the packaging. This is exactly what our car needed.

Thank you,
