Question BHJ balancers

Anyone have any problems with a BHJ balancer? I just bought one for my 400/467 stroker build because my engine builder recommended it over the cheaper models (Professional Products, Summit, etc) and I didn't want to mess with redrilling pulleys for an ATI. I saw some bad comments about BHJs on another Pontiac forum.

Mine looked like it was wobbling on the crank. Turns out it slipped a few degrees. They can be rebuilt and re certified for around $75.

I ran one I got used on my boat for a few years (455P). It spent its whole time spinning at 35-5200 RPMS and never had a problem with it. I will be getting another one for my upcoming build.

i have had 3 of them spin the weight on the hub. they took care of everyone of them but i would recommend putting witness marks on them and looking at them often.

Another good one is the Pro/Race or Summit SFI Damper, has the 4-bolt pattern, The Outer Hub and inner hub are splined so no issues there and no bolts to fall out, These are made by an ex Top Fuel Drag Racer and are really good quality but without the Super high cost, Summit has them for 240$ One going on my 535, It Looks close to stock but all billit Similer to a Romac But Less $

I don't recommend BHJ after running them and having issues. The ONLY balancer i have ever had an issie with. Other then a stock balancer.

Don't have issues with PP balancers. So far. Maybe you need a builder with more experience?

My P P balancer spun off the hub and took out the timing cover. I went with a Romac.

My BHJ cracked at the hub & slipped 10 degrees. $225 to get it rebuilt. I bought a Summit SFI for $229 instead.

Every PP balancer I have seen run[5 so far] has had issues right off the bat. Slipped outer rings, pulley spacing wrong, name plate screws coming out[even with lock tight], shaking engines. One Pontiac we dynoed shook so bad you could feel it in the floor. Shut it down and the balancer was smoking. All the paint burned off, outer ring loose. The customer had a spare BHJ balancer we put on and the engine ran smooth with no problems and is still running. This Pontiac in question was built by another Pontiac builder on these forums who installed the PP balancer. I would not use them for anything personally.

Thumbs up

Damn. Been lucky so far with a PP on my 535. The BHJ I had slipped the outer ring and really thru me into a timing issue as i changed the ingnition box and after a month of buying another timing light without an advance and checking this and try that pulled the BHJ and found the issue. Never had a balancer other then factory ever slip before. Hummmmmm.

Only issue i found was with the early PP and timing marks. And one that had course threads in it. But then again like 99% of everything else Made In China. LOL.

Did have a sbc Pro race SFI shatter on a roundy round engine after a year of use.. Wasn't there so can;'t really state all the facts. But all in all Pro Race might be the better of the easier on the wallet balancers out there.

Got a few on BBC's over the years and making hp without issues.

TIN TIGR, what do you mean about fluid going wacko in Fluidampr? I bought a Fluidampr when there wasn't much choice for Pontiacs years ago and never anticipated any problem. The damper is one solid piece with fluid inside. Not much to go wrong IMO.

on the fluid dampr..it was on a nice 454 chevy..the motor ran well, but died..owner was an animal, never warmed it up, just start it and hit 6k plus..it finally blew the distributor out of the engine..upon teardown the caps were walking, and the crank was cracked in 6 spots..i know he ran cheap gas in it to amaze his pals, but the bearings showed no signs of scuffing or detonation..apparently, from other boards, and speaking to some folks, the fluidampr needs a couple minutes to warm up and get fluid moving...if ya wing it right off, the fluid can be stuck in one spot and throw balance waaaay off..this is what i was told, and from what i found, seemed plausible..

and i have no issues with bhj..what kind of dampr does butler sell?
