Muncie Trans I.D. Tag
Anyone have a 67-69 Firebird with it's original Muncie trans. that still has the factory I.D. tag attached to one of the side cover bolts?
I'm curious as to what number is on these tags... Factory assembly part number, as found in PMD Parts Catalog or... ? See pix below for reference. Note that the tag below (from a '69 T/A) matches what is in the parts book.

John, it should be the original trans assembly p/n.
My '64 GTO M20 trans still has the 9774825 p/n tag attached to the side cover. If you ordered 3.90 axle in '64, you got the 9774826 trans assembly (same M20 trans but with a 6 tooth internal speedo drive gear for speedo accuracy with the 3.90 axle). Late year '64, you could order the M21 as a Special Equipment Option, the trans assembly p/n on the tag was 9777000. None of these p/ns would be found in the '66 Master Parts Catalog since they were all superseded by the '65 p/ns. So you need to be careful looking at the MPC Service Replacement p/ns. They may or may not be the same trans assembly p/ns used in production, just depended on whether the original production trans assembly p/n had been superseded by the time the MPC was issued. But I'm 95% sure that the original tags on '67-'69 Muncies would show the trans assembly p/n, same as was being done in '64 and '65. And same as you found for that tag for the TA (same style as the tag on my '64). The p/n tag was installed by Muncie when they assembled the trans before shipping to the various Final Assembly Plants. The VIN stamps were done at the Final Assembly Plants, Muncie had no idea what specific build a given trans assembly would be installed in when they shipped the trannies. I don't know much about the Firebird. Looking at the MPC excerpts you posted, I'm curious to know how the Muncies used in the 'bird differed from the Muncies used in the Tempest which warranted unique p/ns for each. Only thing I can think of might be a difference in the internal speedo drive gear due to a tire size difference. Or did the Firebird require a different tailhousing vs. the Tempest? I would have expected them to carry the same p/ns, so I'm surprised that they didn't. |

Here's a cool one. Brian Styles recently located this for his 1968 RAII Firebird.

What would be the correct number for a 1967 firebird 400 with a.i.r, 3:36 posi, muncie?

John V, I believe that Firebird part numbers are not the same as A body’s because the speedometer cable drive locations are on opposite sides of the tail housing.

A Schab, that would make perfect sense (as far as the p/n difference). Perhaps the Camaro influence forced that? Pontiac generally used the LH location, Chevy the RH from what I've always understood, at least for a time.
Jason, I can only go by what John posted from the MPC. If there was no supercedure, all '67 Firebird V8s would have gotten the 9789170 unless equipped with a 3.90 or 4.33 rear axle. If you have an original p/n tag on yours, would be worth knowing what it reads. I think the p/n tags are reproduced, aren't they? Or is that a Corvette thing? |

So...
I have several original tags...even one with a WT suffix...and have decoded them all but I do not believe I have any numbers mentioned here. I'll try to get some pix up.

The tag # on my R/A IV 69 T/A with 3.90’s and m 21 is 9798975. I believe it is original to the car.
