There is a car near me listed for $48,000. I am thinking it is about $15,000 too high.

Convertible. Paint is ok, but not great, interior is somewhat worn but complete. console 8-lugs. Has the PDH, was a 3 spd manual/389 converted to 421 4 apd and tri-power.

As few of these come up for sale its hard to know the value. thoughts?

Ideas on how to approach the owner without driving a wedge with what he might see as a low-ball offer?

Left out maybe the most important element - its a Bonneville. Not a 2+2 or catalina.

Sounds like a dreamer to me. Old cars Price Guide lists a 65 Cat Vert at $9400 in #3 condition. Your description says, ok paint and worn interior. There is no way it is a #2 or certainly not a #1. A #1 Is listed as $21,000, and a #1 is perfect, never driven and better than original. I think the guy watches too many TV auctions. That said, a car is worth what someone is willing to pay. Even if you offered $15k less, you'd be way over a #1 car. I would keep looking.

If it was a 421-4 speed numbers matching car and a 2+2, the price would still be high but easier to justify. I'm thinking it's a $15k car tops if it truly is presentable and the conversion work was done well. This is obviously without pictures and assuming that it needs no mechanical work, the top is good, etc.

Think of it this way: that price will buy you a mint condition numbers matching 428HO 4 speed convertible '67 2+2 and maybe even have a few grand leftover.

If he were asking $15,000 it would be mine already, ha! but yeah, definitely not a show winning 2+2! Problem is trying to figure out the middle ground. Here is a link to the craigslist add. As I am unwilling to pay anywhere near his asking price, I can share it.

Well the pictures definitely appear nicer than you made them out to be. I don't think it's worth more than $25-30k, but that's just my opinion based on what I would pay if I wanted such a car. If it was as-made at the factory with a 421 and 4 speed, then it would be +$30k in value.

I agree that the pictures do show very nice and better than how I perceived your description. But, he is still asking way more than a number 1 car that had the engine and transmission factory installed. And as nice as that car appears, and I like it a lot too, it is NOT a number 1.
