68 Muncie shift lever / OEM Competition Plus Shifter vulcanized rubber replacement
Folks,
I know some of you have been through this. I rebuilt my Muncie and rebuilt the shifter, but didn't do anything about the vulcanized rubber where the shift rod ends mount to the tranny shift levers and the shifter. The rubber is long gone. It basically was worn, torn and half fallen off to start with. So, what is the best route? I rebuilt everything to be as stock as possible, but I'm now thinking the way to go is to just go ahead and drill out the holes in both the shifter and the tranny shift arms and then install the Paul Cangialosi hardened steel bushings. If there was someone out there that could re-do the vulcanized rubber for a reasonable price, I'd still consider that even though I'd have to disassemble the shifter again. I'm also thinking I should maybe not drill the holes and just install some nylon washers or maybe hard rubber washers....??? So, what do ya say? I need to get this done so I can get the car together and move. Old Joe: |

Try Dennis with DME transmissions. He has done several shifters for me over the years and does great work.

Please give me a little more info. I want to know why I should call him. Everything I have is already rebuilt. Does he redo the vulcanized rubber on the shifter plates and muncie shift levers?

I don't care if you call him or not. I thought you were looking for someone to redo the rubber bushings on your shift arms. Good luck!

Thank you for the lead. I am indeed looking for someone to do the vulcanizing. I wasn't clear from your first message what you meant by saying he had done several shifters for you. I didn't know if that meant he actually had done the vulcanizing for you.

Doesn't Ames and other places make new rubber bushings to go in there?

You are correct. They can be used on the shifter but not the transmission shift levers. Originally those pieces were used on the later shifters that didn't have the vulcanized rubber. I thought about using those, but saw some listings that said they won't fit the older (1968 shifters). The missing information is that they will fit, as long as you completely remove the leftover pieces of rubber that were there originally. I pulled another later model shifter off of my shelf and it had some of those rubber bushings in it so I took one out and it did indeed fit my 68 shifter. As for the trans shift levers, the rubber bushings won't fit as the slotted part of the through holes aren't big enough for the thin rubber stems of the bushings.
So, in the end, I'm going to see how much it would cost to do the vulcanizing. If cost prohibitive, I'll use the rubber bushings on the shifter. I really don't want to drill the holes larger in the trans shift levers for the steel bushings so I may have to use the wavy type steel spring washers and live with the little bit of slop from wear. This car only has 76K miles so it's not too bad. Quote:
