The vin # will be stamped on the left side lower of the timing cover which should match the vin tag as you are looking at the motor. It is farily faint and painted over so some sandpaper might be in order. I believe Olds motors distributors are on the front of the engine not rear like Pontiacs. Should also find a 2 letter code near that vin like yh to identify which block you have date code by the distributor will tell you what year engine was built.

Olds distributors are in the rear and attached to the block. All Olds engines can be identified by the oil fill pipe at the front. If the VIN has a Z in it, it is the Pontiac engine, if it has a K it is the Olds engine.

If the olds motor has ever been rebuilt it is likely the # on the block is gone. Olds just happend to put the # on the driver side of the block just below the front of the cylinder head. One trip to the machine shop and the # is ground off as the block is surfaced.

Ok oil fill tube on front not distributor. Shows you how much I know about Olds. Am I not correct that if this is an automatic that this should be the Olds engine. Think only 4 speeds got the pontiac motor.

In 79 all 400 Pontiac cars were 4 speed you could still get the 301 pontiac in auto otherwise all the 403 olds motors were autos.

Of course you could look at the shaker identifications: 6.6 T/A = 400, 4.9 T/A = 301, 6.6 litre = 403.

In 79 the 4.9 litre engine did not have any shaker ID. It was left blank. Yes I can still remember that far back!
