I'm not sure what the deal is but I drove my 68 from 1976-85 ... probably 60,000 miles. The thing was an abortion of teenage hotrod parts, poor maintenance, cheap gas, timed by ear, torqued by feel, never aligned, assembled in filth and running whatever carb I thought was cool year by year. Drove it about 40,000 miles that way (after buying it with 92,000 miles on it). Probably the only thing decent I did for it was use synthetic oil. The thing ran great right up to about 133,000 miles. Bent a few push rods from revving to 6,000, never had a major failure. I'd hop in it and drive all day without even thinking twice.

Flash forward ... I'm spending years of meticulous labor, everything by the book, spending probably $30k .... and it wouldn't surprise me if it blew up the first time I took it out .... the car had some kind of magic back then.

Two different cars and stories. My first GTO was a 69. I drove it for 10 years. First 7 it was my only transportation. I drove it to college, street raced it, raced on a drag strip, and dated a girl on the other side of the state (Florida). I had put over 100k on the car before selling.

Second car was a low mileage 72 Catalina that I used to pull my trailer with a 67 GTO on it. Attended GTOAA Nats in St. Louis and Indianapolis from Florida as well as many trips for shows in and out of state. Had about 38k miles when I got it and had about 140k when I sold it. Never rebuilt engine, transmission, or rear end and it still ran great.

I put over 2000 miles each on the 79 Formula and the 76 Fire Am this summer. I have put at least 2000 miles on the Fire Am each summer since I bought it 4 years ago

In my old 68 GTO 2.93 geared 400 car , I drove from Ennis TX to Tulsa OK to drag race at a Pontiac event on my stock size tires. Ran some 13's , won some cash and came home trouble free 700 miles round trip. Even cruised a bit of old Route 66. I think that was the furthest from home I drove on a single trip in my old rides.

Bought a 69 GTO ragtop at Vandenburg AFB near Santa Barbara and drove it to Montreal Canada back in 84. Gave her the money, stopped at the local DMV to plate it (Had a California drivers license back then) and headed home.

Remember it well, first took the PCH to LA, then the 10 to the 15 to the 70 to the 80, then the 90 to Detroit and home on the 401 in Canada. 3,000 miles, top down the whole way, weather was great, 3.55's and a 4 speed, zero issues, oh to be young again!

I bought my '65 2+2 in 2007, got it on the road for it's first shakedown in July, 2009 - 900 miles round trip from DE to POCI Dayton Convention. Between that trip and 2014 (when I acquired my first trailer and tow vehicle) I drove the car over 25,000 miles in 4 years:
5 trips to Norwalk - 900 miles r/t
POCI Convention 2010 Charleston, WV 900 miles r/t
POCI Convention 2011 Bowling Green, KY 1600 miles r/t
POCI Convention 2012 St. Charles, IL 1600 miles r/t (non-stop 15-hour return drive of 800 miles)
POCI Convention 2013 Dayton, OH 900 miles r/t
6-10 trips per year to drag strips in NJ & MD, where the odometer reading was bumped 1/4-mile at a time doing an average of 6 passes/outing
During all those trips the car only let me down one time - failed master cylinder on the PA Turnpike.
I'm proud to say this car has served me well as a "triple threat" - great cruiser, points-judged award winner, drag strip performer.

My friend Dave, who has since passed, took a road trip from Milwaukee out to California taking as much of Route 66 (or what's left of it) as he could in his 1969 Catalina Convertible. Not sure how many miles but I know it was a few thousand! I don't believe he had any major issues either other that a small leak in his top! Man, that must have been some trip! Wish he was still here to do it again....I would have loved to go with him!

Default Dingleberry lake?

...seriously?
I had to google that one. To quote Wikipedia,"Dingleberry Lake is a natural lake in Inyo County, California, in the United States. Dingleberries on the buttocks of local sheep caused the lake's name to be selected. "
I don't think i want to go swimming in that water.
