Default Restoring dash bezel

My 74 Formula has a ugly wood grain dash bezel that needs help. The heater control face needs the same. I would rather try restoring the parts myself than buy new or send it out. Anyone here done this and have any tips or pointers?

I used the kitchen cabinet vinyl on one a couple years ago for a friend, still looks good, did the bezel. cut and fold the edges nice where the heater goes, its much better than paint or?
