Default Snow

First, my condolences to those out of power, and other essentials.

But personally, first time in two years we have had enough snow to play with the Gator and its blade. We have maybe 7~8 inches, really hard to measure because of the wind and the drifts, but had about 7 inches on the hoods of the cars. Supposedly, more on the way tonight.

Got out, and had fun. Bladed our driveway, and the street in front of the house (keeps the commercial snowplow from piling a huge stack in my driveway).

Only had to engage the 4-wheel drive once.

If we get 5 inches more tonight as the weather forcasts, will get to play more tomorrow. I know, 5 inches isn't enough to give driving problems, but gives me an excuse to play!

Jon.

It's fun when it's not constant. Here in Colorado we've been on about a per week or every other week schedule of 6ish inches for the past month and a half. That's typical in the mountains, but not necessarily so on the eastern plains.

I finally broke down and got on a snow removal schedule with a local company.

Predicted 12-16" tonight and tomorrow.

40 years of dealing with this stuff ... it's no longer fun in any way shape or form.

Hey, Jon, I'm on your side,

Born and raised in northern MN and have spent all 68 of my winters in MN, MA, Germany, VA, back to MN, WI and back to MN.

If anything, I'm upset we don't have more snow. I enjoy shoveling and blowing snow. I still downhill ski.

The blizzard of 77 , my dad on our HD5 fiat allis loader in front of our house clearing out about 400 foot of our driveway we’re up on the snowbank which is about 8 foot high ! I bought my first Pontiac (73 trans am )about 4 months after this. Definitely not fun anymore

Personally, I love the snow. I’ve lived in New England my whole life. I enjoy driving in it before the salters come out, always rear wheel drive only! Got two feet here last weekend.

I dont mind the snow as it usually will snow and melt the next couple of days here. It is the people who keep moving here and drive 5 miles an hour when there is about 2 inches on the road. We had a decent blizzard last year and I am hoping for a few more. That should chase a few more people out of here. I heard a guy on his phone the other day when it was like 40 degrees outside and he said he was over winter.............really. I will take a CO heavy snow over a humid NY heavy snow anyday.

Jon, there was a truck driver that stopped here in OH today at the Love's truck stop, Wendy's restaurant from MO. He didn't say where in MO he was from. He said he just got off the phone with his mother, and they had 8 inches on the ground at about 2:00 PM today.

Like Dataway, I grew up near lake Erie (Erie PA,) affected by lake effect snow. I've seen enough snow to last me a lifetime. Down here 6 inches constitutes a snow emergency (never even heard of a snow emergency until I moved here). In Erie if you couldn't get to where you wanted to go, you just waited until you could, or got a 4X4 to get you there.

So far today, all we have is steady rain, but the closing list for Thursday is already long, and getting longer....LOL.

When I lived in Erie PA they didn't close anything for snow until it was at least 8 inches, after it snowed, not beforehand. Our school superintendent (when I was a kid) decided it by this scale. If he could walk from his front porch, to his mailbox (grown man), we had school. I was in 6th grade before we had my very first snow day off from school, about 2 1/2 feet overnight.

Where I live now, (central OH) the snowfall averages 20-40 inches per year. Coming from an area that gets 140-200 inches a year, it's just a minor annoyance for me. No one here knows how to plow snow, or drive in it.

When I lived in Memphis TN, 4 inches of snow would shut down the whole city for a week..... They have little, to no snow equipment, so they just wait for it to melt.

Here in Missouri we do not annually get the snowfall you folks get with the lake effect. However, about every 5 years we get a good one. I can remember several from 15~22 inches, but only one over 24 inches.

I used to shovel sidewalks, but just drove on the driveways. Dad taught me how to drive on snow, and various tricks to co-existing with it. One of them was he bought a pair of heavy duty rims, a pair of used tires, and a good set of chains for each of our vehicles. We would mount the chains on the wheels before the first snow (you can do a much better job of mounting chains with the wheels off the vehicle) and then placed them in the trunk to be mounted on the vehicle as necessary.

I got my first 4-wheel drive about 15 years ago (for stability in pulling a trailer, not for driving in snow). Never really needed 4-wheel drive, although after driving with it, I like it.

My Grandmother had a "saying" for just about everything, but one of her favorites was "a brown February means a full graveyard". A hundred years ago, folks thought the snow and cold would kill bugs, and germs, and generally lead to a more healthy life.

The worst thing about the snow is that MoDot believes it is their duty to lay about 2 inches of salt and cinders on the roads. And where does that salt end up? We park all but one vehicle after a snow until the roads are dry. And frequent the quarter carwash (after going to the bank for a roll of quarters).

Anyway, I had a very pleasant afternoon, looking forward to another tomorrow.

Jon.

This was all bare pavement and grass before the storm.

Is good to have a break from cutting grass. Very good.
Is good to deter the pest population, (fire ants, roaches, fleas, destructive slugs the size of bullfrog tadpoles, rats, mice, armadillos, etc), very good.
Northern US has the best soils for growing great food!

No snow here in south central Indiana yet; just ice from freezing rain.
