I had a 71 Camaro with column shift.... no console. In that respect Pontiac and Chevrolet were the same.... as both were built on the same assembly line.

Here's one for ya.... 81 Formula Trans Am. LOL

No such animal. It's either a Trans Am or Formula, not both as one.

Yes they did. Around 1980 I saw a 74 455 SD Formula with a TA hood and shaker scoop. I assume the factory made it ?

Yes

There is supposedly one in the Rochester, NY area. I've never seen it but heard about it from a few people. Super rare car.

I had asked about the Shaker hood scoop on a on a 79 Formula hood when I ordered mine, and the dealer owner just laughed at me. He said no it had not and would not happen. Never said a thing about the 58 that were built.

Yeah I know, you can't believe what a dealer will tell you when you order a new car.

I found this one on the internet, but I really think it looks like an addon. Looks like crap to me and glad I could never get it on my 79 Formula.

LOL!

Back in the 70's, my Pontiac dealer told me that all '65 GTO's came standard with Tri-Power.

Huh, funny that this came up because I saw a video of a really nice looking 73 formula SD 455 car with a shaker hood scoop. I kinda figured it was due to the fact that those hoods didn't always hold up so well and replacements being hard to find. This thread got me thinking about that.

This is the video. The Formula part starts at 6:13

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JOfXh6pXf0

Then today I found this:

http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2018...d-455-was.html

So these were factory cars? That's pretty cool. Makes you want one.

Edit (1): plus that blue bird can fly! 12.89!

Edit (2): Found this: https://www.hotrod.com/articles/1973...uper-duty-455/

If you ordered the SD 455 engine for the Formula, you also got the shaker hood.

I see from jhein's links that they did not have the Formula hood. So.... to me, even with Formula-455 on the fender, it is not a true Formula Firebird because of Pontiac only using the Shaker hood and what they said about the emissions.

I don't care how many Pontiac built. That's my story and I'm stickin' too it. In my way of thinking, right or wrong, to be an honest to God true Formula it needs the Formula hood. And a Formula Ram Air hood would have been perfect for it.

Only 43 built and only 10 with a 4 speed. If you like rare cars, that's pretty rare.

Yes, very rare. I've seen only two SD 455 Formulas. ... one 73 and one 74 Even more rare... some of the colors offered, they only produced one of each. Example: Only one Brewster green 73 SD 455 Formula was produced.

In '73 silver and white were the most popular colors.

Definitely couldn't get a shaker scoop on a 79 Formula from the factory.

That picture is something an owner did to the Formula hood.

I almost did the same thing to my 72 Firebird that I put a Formula hood on myself in the late 70's. I picked up a complete shaker assm. from a 76 TA, and had the pattern all taped out on the Formula hood so I could cut the hole.
I just couldn't do it, and so glad I didn't !
I still have the shaker assm. in storage from all those years ago ...lol

I saw a beautiful white 73 SD-455 Formula two summers ago in NJ. I think the guy was from Freehold.

Good for your Sir. Some garages have all the luck. Nice collection of Pontiacs you've got there.

The question is, why? I'm sure someone here knows. Something about the fit of the Formula air cleaner assembly on that particular configuration? But in 73 those weren't functional, right? So that's probably not it. The shaker was also not functional in 73, but easier to convert than the Formula setup. Could that be it, easier to convert to functional? Somehow, I doubt that too. I'd love to know though.
