Is Ram Air any good?
I'm looking to replace my tube style headers and go with more of a factory header, Has anyone dealt with Ram Air restoration ent.? My 65 Lemans has a 400 in it and its pretty tight between the header and the control arm bolt. Will going with the factory style help with the clearance issues? And is Ram Air a good company to deal with? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Good co,Paul has been very good for me.The factory RA exhaust is the only way to go IMO for a street car.Have used them on both of my GTOs and a 69 bird.I believe our sponsor also sells them.Tom

Bought mine from RARE in 07. Very good to deal with. No issues at all, and 20k street miles.

Tom or OCMDGTO, can either of you tell me if I will gain any clearance between the control arm and the tube style header if I go to the factory style header?

Can't say for sure, my car is a 69. If I had to bet I would say yes.

The reason I ask is that the headers I have now actually are rubbing the control arm. I also don't like how much the headers reduce my clearance. I'm looking to increase my ground clearance and that between the control arms and the header, but how much power will I loose?

There has been over the years quite a few tests for power difference in headers over the Ram Air exhaust. Depending on who you listen to there can be no loss of power on the street car Or there is about 15% loss over the use of headers, or as little as 5% of loss over the headers. I have them on my 73 GTO with E-heads, round port heads. I don't have any comparison against the manifolds vs the headers but I know that I run 11:77 @ 122 mph with full exhaust & the Ram Air manifolds & I don't have any leaks & they don't seem to come loose like the headers I had with the D-port heads before.

As far as power loss, I'm pretty sure Hi Perf Pontiac did a test that said there is a negligible loss between RA manifolds and headers until you go over 450 horses. Ground clearance, leaks, and noise reduction are why I took the headers off my car when I first got it. I'm surprised no 65 owners have chimed in.

Okay, so my next question is fitment. I have a 65 LeMans with a 400 c.I. from a 74 Grand Prix but the cylinder heads are d ports from a 68 firebird. Am i looking for fitment to the heads or is it more complicated than that.

You would get the manifolds to fit the chassis. I assume your current heads have all the bolt holes. If so, you should be fine.

Paul is a long time Pontiac guy. Back when he was in Texas had a number of parts also.

Murf, are you running stock control arms? The pics are great by the way. And are you running 3" all the way back? What mufflers are you running? How loud are they? I want a some rumble but not obnoxious.
Skip thanks for the info. I guess it would be better to just call and talk to them about what I have and what I want I guess. |

redhawk44, Stock control arms and I run the 3" pipes to the X pipe, 2.5" out of the X with 2.5" mufflers. I used the oversize Ram Air Restorations manifolds. I used the 3 inch headpipes because it seemed like they made a tighter turn for more ground clearance. Seems like there will be plenty but it's still on jackstands. Paul was great to work with and the manifolds seem top notch. Good luck with your project!

Your host now makes these manifolds as well. We'd hope you give a look.
