1968 gto conv quarter panel brace
I was looking for some input on replacing the quarter panel skin on a 68 gto convertible.
I have rust around the wheel and about 4 inches behind. Also I have collision damage in front of the wheel opening to the door edge, down to rocker panel. I was going to cut in the low area below belt line and cut inside the door. But I found a brace that looks like it has about a 1/4 inch foam adhesive attached to the top of the wheel housing connecting to the quarter panel. I also found the marker light was about a 1/2 higher on all skins I looked at. So it's coming down to cutting around the wheel and foward to cover the collision damage or cutting in the low area and down in front of the marker light. If anyone has already had to make this decision, I would appreciate your input? |

Hello Dan, and welcome! I kind of had the same isue on my 68 vert. Lot of wheel house rust and door jamb damage do to a hit.
I did 1/4 skins from goodmark (OK but need atention come paint) Chek your outer wheel house and it may need to be replace to (good chance if there is alot of rust where you say). I'll post some pics of some of my work for an idea. New white area is a donor piece from another car, I wanted to keep this factory metal in door jamb. Hope this helps alittle you can do a search and see what others have done. Dominick

Thanks for responding.
I already temp cut and tacked wheel housing. The outer edge was in bad shape. It looks like your top cut went across brace. Did you use a bead of seam sealer to reattach skin to brace? If so how did you weld across it, without melting the bead? Fyi, I was planning on cutting inside door edge and my collision damage went down to the rocker panel. I am planning on making a L shaped patch and spot welding to the rocker panel like orginal so that it looks like the orginal seam. The replacement 1/4 skin covers the rocker panel. |
