I havent cofirmed this; '79 Trans AM WS6 Box or a Monte SS boxes are bolt ins.

I have a 78 GA and would like to do away with the power steering and go to manual. Do I just change out the steering box? WW3, got what I need? Thanks-Jim

Though I have not done this conversion on a 79 Lemans, I have put 79-81 WS6 box's in a 66&67 lemans, 69 firebird, and installed a 86 monte 55 box in a 73 lemans.
I would go with the WS6 box as it is a straight "bolt in" item. The monte SS box requires the metric rag joint coiplling (from the Monte's box) as it has a smaller input shaft than the earlier boxes. It also required making up a1/2 metric (for the box side) and 1/2 standard Pwr steering pressure hose.
I can't imagine that either box won't bolt into you aplication, but I don't know if the 79 uses the metric input shaft or lines.
