Default Grand Prix 1978 Vin decode... help

Hello.

I found this car at a barn, it's all original untouched for at least 15 years (i can tell by the late style license plates that were changed around here)

anyways.. Hood doesn't open, and i want to know what engine it has inside...
It has bucket seats and a floor shifter, tachometer in the dash, etc. etc. so i guess it's a V8..

vin is:
2h37w8p******

Please help me decode it...
I hope it's not a 301, and at least a 350.. It has a HUGE front sway bar..

I also have a '78 GP. According to my OEM manual the vin 2H37W8P###### decodes to:

2: Pontiac
H: Grand Prix (SJ)
37: 2-Door Notchback Hardtop Coupe
W: 301 4bbl
8: 1978
P: Pontiac, MI plant

The engine options for this were:

A: 231
Y: 301 2bbl
W: 301 4bbl
U: 305

If its an auto tranny, the 305 came with a TH350 and the others came with a TH200.

The 305 was the Calif emissions version.
Nothing wrong with a 4 bbl 301.

i'd rather the have the 301 myself, it was rated with my hp and torque than the smogger 305, and maybe even the 350 of that year if i remember correctly. not to mention you already have pontiac brackets and accessory wiring.

Ditto to what heff & srercrcr said. The 301 is a fine engine, as long as you're not bent on bracket racing the car.
A cherry SJ would make a nice street cruiser, and the 301 is not bad on gas either.
