I have a 231 buick V6 in my 79 lemans safari wagon and want to put a standard flywheel off from a 1978 231 buick V6 out of a pontiac sunbird on it. This is so I can convert the car to a 4 speed for now while the 412 and nash 5 speed are being readied . Are these 2 231's the same motor so I won't run into balance problems???

i believe the odd fire engines had straight up valve covers like the nailhead buicks and the even fire was more typical V engine. to be sure i would call a salvage yard and have them look in a hollander interchange book for the flywheel and they should be able to tell what range of years it will fit.

look at the dist cap. the even fire terminals are evenly spaced oddfire's aren't.
the cranks are different so if i remember correctly the flywheels aren't interchangable between the 2. mike

according to a hollander a 78 sunbird flywheel manual trans 231 v-6 is a one year only flywheel among that body style[skyhawk, monza, sunbird].i had him look up the v-6 231 in a mid size[lemans, regal, cutlass]and the 78-80 interchanged among those body style.i worked in a yard years ago and these books were good but not 100%. hope this helps

From every thing I have been able to dig up, (I have a 78 sunbird wagon 231 v-6) the 75-77 engines are Odd fire, the late 77-78engines are even fire, but still use the odd fire heads & intake/exaust manifolds, and have some 78 year only parts like the flywheel. (sorry but I have run into this myself.) I do know a guy local to me that is putting a V-8/auto in his 80 starefire that was a V-6/4speed so he doesn't need the bellhousing & flywheel so if you are interested I could pick them up fairly cheep I am shure.
