I need help with locations of engine #'s and and matching what. How do I determine if the engine is the original engine? Any help would be appreciated

Left hand side of the block, pass side as you look at it from the front.

There will be a two diget code, probably both letters.

Then a sting of numbers. If you have your Protecto-plate or your PHS documents, that number will be on them. Cyl heads should be 093 or 670 if a 1967 car.

www.phs-online.com If you don't have the PHS on it, I suggest you get it.

If you don't have the protectoplate, then you have to go by casting date, which should be a few weeks (or more) before the car was assembled.

They started putting the VIN number on the block in late '67, IIRC, and certainly by '68.

The casting date is located by the distributor hole, and will consist of a letter, which indicates the month, then 3 numbers, indicating the day and the last digit of the year.

My 455 is a '74, so the date code reads I283, which is September 28th, 1973.

A '66 or earlier car with a proper casting number, 2 letter application code (ie: YS for an auto) block, intake and heads date coded a few weeks or so before the assembly date of the car, is generally considered "numbers matching". YMMV......
