I bought a running driving 79 bird with a 455 and a great body for 1400. It had the rusty jones treatment lol. My 69 bird 400 cost me 2000 bucks running and driving 20 footer. Funny thing, I actually wanted a 65 GTO before a firebird and passed on a 65 with 389, 4 speed, 4 bbl, white. It was beautiful but couldn't swing the 3200. The year was 1995.

The car in my avatar I bought 40 years ago for $800. The picture was taken the day I got it.

I paid "cash money" for my '70 Challenger R/T with custom paint. I can't remember exactly, but it was about $800.

We bought our 68 GTO for $3000.00 in 1994. Had a 72 350 under the hood, but the original 400 that needed rebuilt came with it.

Bought this in 1975 for $2,000. It had 28,000 on it then it now has a bit over 47,000. Money well spent I think.

$2,000 compounded at an annual rate of 8% over 38 years would be a little over $41,000 - but not nearly as much fun as putting 19,000 miles on a classic piece of Americana!

49 DeSoto 4 dr. 3-on-the-tree: $20 in 1975. Nothing special, but reliable transportation for a poor college student.
66 Chevelle SS396 4 speed convertible, 3.90 posi: $40 in 1976. Had to keep and eye on the oil level.
74 Grand Am 4 speed: $3000 + 66 Chevelle in 1978.
70 Dodge T/A Challenger 340 tri-power auto: $1300 in 1979.

Had I kept the Chevelle and the Challenger, I'd have cars worth some money now. Back then they were just used cars. When premium gas went away, people were unloading them. People knew the rare cars (RAIV, Hemi, 427, etc.) were special and they commanded premium prices even back then.

I know it says MUSCLE CARS but this $600 Cadillac was directly responsible for my first GTO. I bought the Caddy for $600 in '80 and swapped it even for my first GTO in '82...So, I guess, the answer is '$600'.

My friends thought I was crazy to give up to uber-clean 80,000 mile Caddy for a beat up looking GTO but I never looked back. In fact, I never did get over my first GTO. Super solid, great original car just needing a little paint and the bumper straightened out. Pic was taken the day I brought it home.

Paid $200.00 for this car from the original owner in 1985. Didn`t run. Got a junkyard 455 for $35.00. That motor still runs today at only 030 over and 500hp or so.

Lets see... From 1985 to 1995, I don't think I ever paid more than $1000 for a car, and they were almost all "musclecars"

68 GTO $50 in 1986 (project)
68 GTO $400 in 1987 (numbers matching - running)
67 GTO $100 in 1987 (project)
71 GT-37 455HO $500 in 1988 (numbers matching - running)
70 TA 4 speed $800 in 1992 (numbers matching - not running)
70 Formula 400 4 speed $700 in 1993 (numbers matching - running)

Bought my '66 GTO in 1989 from the 2nd owner for $3K cash and a 1984 Yamaha FJ1100. I figure the cash deal was around $6K.

Numbers matching CA car with nice options, perfect interior and a repaint of original color. Won 3rd at a local Pontiac show soon after getting it.

In 1990 it was repainted the original color, Cordova top replaced, motor rebuilt along with all mechanicals and detailed the engine bay. Also added some factory options I liked. Totally done by '94. Paint still looks awesome today and the job back then cost under $3K.

Time has gone pretty quickly but I still drive and enjoy (though my wagon has been getting most of the miles recently

In 2006 I bought my 67 GTO project car for $1650. I was in 8th grade. The car sat with little progress in my dads shop until this past spring. Almost every day I work on it even of its only a small thing or 2. We're hoping to send. Off to paint and body this upcoming fall. By the time it's all said and drivable it'll be about a decade.

My first 67 hardtop GTO for $1200 in 1987.
Project '67 hardtop GTO in 1990 for similar money.
'70 GTO, 455/4 speed (matching numbers) but with right side damage for $1900 in 1991.

They've gotten progressively more expensive in the ensuing years!

Very first car I owned was a 66 GTO 4speed... bought for $1100.00 in 1970. Due to being young and stupid I totaled it. Didn't have or save the money for a good set of front tires.

Next car was a 63 GP.... 300.00. Nice but it was only around until I could get another A-body. That was the 66 Tempest Custom... 600.00. And being stupid agai I got rid of it seen the ST-300 was crapping out on me. I kick myself today for not having any of the 3.
