Default 66 GTO lower quarter panel molding

Both lower quarters on my convertible had to have patch panels installed. When disassembling the car, I was very careful when removing the molding because I knew the quarters were in such poor condition. The only thing I salvaged from this effort was the remnants of two clips shown in the attached photo. Does anybody have a pic they can post showing a complete clip? I will have to engineer something to substitute for these clips and knowing what the whole thing looks like will help me figure this out.

Below are the clips used for attaching the rocker moldings on the 66. You'll just need to drill the holes in your fresh metal for the clips. There will be a larger lower hole for the tab to fit into, and a smaller hole above for the sheet metal screw that fastens the clip to the body. You can buy them from Ames, OPGI, and numerous other vendors.

I think the clip you posted is for the rocker molding that runs along below the door. The clip I am seeking attaches the molding that runs along the bottom of the quarter panel from the rear of the rear wheel opening to the rear bumper. Evidently, there was a reproduction of this clip and the setting tool designed to install it into the oval/oblong holes in the quarter panel, but our host now shows these to be discontinued. I haven’t turned up any in my searches. Just hoping somebody may have a photo of an original or even the reproduction.

That GM clip was a great contributor to premature rusting of lower quarter panels as it provided a moisture trap. Unless you really want to punch holes in your lower quarter (though you will have to for the bottom attaching screws), you can cut the upper 2" off of a rocker molding clip and use emblem adhesive tape to attach clips to quarter. I stripped a car once that someone used this tape along the upper edge and lower edge, and you couldn't tell till it was time to remove it.

Jeff, I forgot to pay attention to the photo of this clip in the catalog. Looked at it again and it seems that most of my old clip is still there. At least I now see that the original clip was not a lot bigger, didn’t have additional lips, curves, features, etc.

Andre, I’m sure you are right about the oblong holes inviting rust. I’m not excited about drilling any kind of hole in my quarters, but may have to, at least along the bottom edge. I’m going to explore the adhesive idea some more. I’m sure there are body shop grade adhesives available today that are far superior to anything I’m familiar with. I’ll ask my painter about this.

Post #2 shows clips for the long stainless rocker moldings.

The rear lower quarter panel stainless molding clips which you are asking about take the ones shown below.

These are 1966 only clips. Both style clips are shown on my ‘66.
