67-68 Firebird seat with a headrest
Did they come this way? My friend says no and I don't see a listing for them in the Ames catalog. Can someone settle this argument for us? The seat is black and only the passenger seat and back seat for a coupe ( I believe ) are here. The person must have had more than one though, there are 2 seat backs for the rear and only one bottom.

Yes. Optional on 67 and 68 Firebirds. Became a Federal law for Jan 1, 1969, so while all 69s had head restraints, they were billed on invoice as an option until then.

Timely post. I'm tired of the low back seats in my 68. What was used for high-back/head restraint. Would I simply shop for replacement 69 seats? Not sure what fits and would look correct.
thanks!

Thanks for settling that argument guys. I think the headrest looks like a 69 headrest, but I cannot be positive. It is a great looking seat even with the tears and stitching broken.

There were actually 4 versions of the first gen headrests:
The 67 headrest is noticeably taller than the 68 & 69, and has a 7" chromed bar that holds it in the seat with two holes The 68 headrest is shorter than the 67 and a bit more rounded on top, the bar was now 10" long and has 3 holes and a locking notch The early 69 headrest looks like the 68 but the bar was now 11" long and only one hole and the lock notch switched sides The late 69 headrest is the same as the early but the bar is bent so that the headrest tilts forward when installed. Since the 67-68 headrests were optional and very rare (only installed on about 1% of cars) the 69's are the only ones you are likely to find

Curious when the bent bar showed up for 69?

November-December 68. There was apparently some overlap as supplies of the old ones were exhausted, interior color choice effected when they switched to the new bent style.
