I have a 4 post extended width, and height, like Cliffs.
Had one HUGE problem where the sheave bearings on one end that have double pulleys gave out and the rod that goes in the middle of them just fell out when the cables had slack. Mine looked similar to Bob's ( pictured above) with my Formula top side. I used a lolly column and floor jack to get it back level and on the locks.
The FAILURE was the sheave ( pulley stack ) bearings. They never get lube. I have looked at a bunch since, and every one I have seen had wear there. I Highly recommend putting some tri flow or Zep on those double stack bearings, or all the pulley bearings.
The Worst part of a lift is when you put stuff under it ( besides a vehicle) and then you don't use the car up top cause its a pain to get it down!!

Sounds like a good reason to store an extra (driveable) vehicle underneath it!

The lift in 72pontiacproject's picture is identical to mine. Lots of different brands selling the same product! I really likes the guy I dealt with from ASE auto but free shipping means you bring your own giant ass trailer to the shipping depot and pick it up. Then get 6 guys to unload it. They wanted $1000 to install. Uhhh... no thanks. It had some challenges but it not $1k worth. The challenges to assembly were no physical ones.

I'm a Bendpak guy. Have a 10,000# two post that i installed in my shop, plus some 4 post ones I've helped friends put together. Yes, an engine hoist is your friend for sure. Beware, there are some really crappy ones out there. They shouldnt be for sale, this stuff aint worth dying over.

Just curious for those who have installed the hoist themselves, Does home insurance cover the Hoist if something should fail
and you have installed it yourself? I have a 2 post installed 2 years ago, and to cover my butt I had it Professionally installed.
Cost me 800 bucks, but could be money well spent if insurance won't cover it due to installation? Home insurance will cover it
for personal use. LOL

I'm not an insurance agent, but I played one on tv SO YOUR MILAGE MAY VARY.

Generally anything legal, not grossly negligent, and not commercially used will be covered by your home owners policy without issue, as long as it is within code. Just like using any other tool or item. Who installed it likely won't matter. Unless someone other than you was injured and they could prove that you were grossly negligent and had clear reason to believe others were in danger. But they would probably pay even then. The separate law suit might get you?

The vehicles involved will be covered by your auto insurance and potentially your homeowners insurance. If you are worried call your agent. Even if you needed a rider they are very cheap and offer piece of mind.

Just for reference... I called my agent and she said it was not an issue as long as it wasn't being used commercially.

RE: Insurance

I spent 10 years of my life as a business insurance specialist.

As already mentioned - for personal use is key for coverage on a lift. Any vehicle damages would not be covered by the HO policy as there is an exclusion for motor vehicles. Damages would be covered under your auto policy, assuming you have physical damage coverage on said vehicles.

I've never had any problems but for sure took the time yesterday to lube all the bearings, pulleys and cables, thanks for the heads-up......

Greg Smith here too.

Get the taller one. I've owned three over the years. Never a problem. My oldest one has to be 15YO at least. I do not* lift 6000lb suburban's etc, lol. Just me though.

I have been very happy with my direct lifts. I have two four posts and one two post. Had them all delivered and installed and have had no issues over the past 10 years.

They are definitely life changing!

Have you seen the lift on the Hoovie's Garage YouTube channel? I believe it came from Bendpak.

X2. 9 years ago $4000.00 installed never looked back. Nice heavy duty lift has withstood all kinds of work a body off restoration and can park underneath it

I didn't know you have a GN! Looks awesome!

I love the General Lee. That's my next project once I wrap up a 78 T/A I'm doing.

That lift with the Delorean is amazing- no poles to bump into!

Better get that 69 Charger soon. They are like gold in any condition. I paid 16,500 for mine before I converted it to a GL. I would say it’s worth 60-80k today.

My buddy got that Grand National for his 16th birthday! Can you imagine that?? I bought it from him a few years ago. I have every bit of documentation there is for that car.

3 lifts from Greg Smith in my garage. 2 4 posts and a asymmetric 2 post. I also installed 4 other 4 posts for a PY member. All operate flawlessly with 1 4 post over a decade ago. Mechanical ability and common sense needs to be used when installing. Nothing to fear. I have a thread posted from years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if lift failures seen are from someone not making sure the locks were engaged. That's a daily inspection before you walk away from the lift. I always drop the lift onto the safety before I leave the garage.
