Hi Greg
Thanks again for sharing your process. I recovered OK, and it turned out better than I expected. Not perfect, but that's on me, not on the process.. I'm happy with it !! I think my problem was condensation and not surface prep, but whatever, all the SEM stuff worked well and the underlying black seems stuck well. The 3M vinyl masking tape worked really well, sticking through all the solvent and prep and still leaving decent edges. |

Well,, sorry you had so much trouble with it. The black surface is at least 85% of the results. To get the truer chrome look the chrome spray has to be applied in the just the right amount also. A little too much and you start to get the silver paint look. Same thing if you put a clearcoat on it it seems to me. Polishing with a microfiber cloth helps also.
Overall, I'd say your results look good! Kind of a polished stainless or aluminum look. I know for mine, it looks shinier in person than on the photos.

Like I said, the trouble was my blunder somewhere.
As to the reflectance of the Spazstix, I understand your point about the silver paint effect. I'm guessing there are two factors influencing the end result: a) the roughness of the substrate b) the application of the Spazstix Your gloss black Krylon provides a very smooth substrate. My guess is smoother than the as-molded original that received a vacuum-deposited aluminum coating. The process I went through left a rougher surface, primarily from the adhesion promoter, which left almost an "orange peel" effect. The SEM black was thin and conformed well to the substrate. In this case, it was not as smooth as the Krylon would be. I think the SEM black was not designed to build as much as the Krylon, so the net was probably a rougher substrate on mine than what you end up with. As to the application, I could see how an airbrush might help. The aerosol I used had a good nozzle, but the formulation seemed to flash really quick and it took quite a bit of material to look uniform. In the end, this might cause a rougher surface with aluminum flakes that don't lay down and look more like spray paint silver. This is all speculation, and in the end, I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It looks great compared to where I started. |

I think it looks great overall. Looks like you got good reflectivity on the vertical portion to the left of the left pod and probably some other areas that don't show in the pics. It'll really come into it's own when it's stuffed with gauges and has a car wrapped around it.
Looking back at the beginning of this thread, I see it's been right at 2 years and mine is still holding up well.

Greg, I'm bumping this back up.
One thing I was going to ask but forgot is if you used the aluminum backer for the wood veneer? You can buy the veneer with or without it. I've heard you need it and then again I've heard guys have gotten away with not using it. And some didn't but should have as they had adhesion problems.

Gary, they sell one for the '68 but you definitely don't need to use it because the factory did not use it. I didn't use either. Now, the '66 is a different thing. The factory used it and I will too...IF I ever get around to doing anything to it.

Thank you Greg for your suggestion to use Spaz Stix and your pics with instructions.
The 8oz can cost $24 on Amazon, and $26 in shipping (Canadian Funds) but I am very pleased with the result. |

Great job Tempest. Looks not too different than one of those $600 jobs. Did you use the rattle can version or the airbrush stuff? What black paint did you use?
The airbrush stuff was $8 a bottle on ebay back when I did mine. Either way, $24 compared to $600...you done good! I'm really glad to see some other folks getting good results from this method.

The black paint was just a high gloss paint I found for plastic, and I used the aerosol can of Spaz Stix.
for the price, this is great stuff..... when you apply the Spaz Stix to the black paint, the chrome almost appears like 'magic'. Thanks again Greg, it was your post that made me give it a try, and I am very glad I did. |

Thank you for following up.
Where else you gonna get these kinds of results for less than $25?

you are right.
now I am looking for other pieces to 'chrome', like the vent pull knobs on my 67, the emblems on my inner door panels,.... etc... I will post the results when/if I give it a try Thanks again, |

I have an armrest that has been in the trunk of my 'field find' '66 for who knows how many years. Almost ever trace of plating is gone but the pad is good. I was just looking at it yesterday and decided that I'm going to 'spaz it' with before and after pics. When I get it done, I will post it here as well.

Can you tape over this stuff. The reason is I have a fiberglass center dash piece for my 67 'Bird pictured below. What I would like to do is use the Spaz Stix to replicate the polished stainless trim from the factory piece around the edge. Then have a local company hydro dip it with a carbon fiber look.

I've never tried it. Why not do the hydro dip first? Mask the center then spray the edge last.
This stuff was really designed for RC car hobby. If you do a search, you'll probably find all kinds of stuff those guys have tried with it.

I was going to ask the hydro guys about that. I think they clear it after the dip so that should protect the graphics.
