anyone have an opinion on using the black majic electric fan on a 400 gto? will this be a good fix? if so, should i ditch the stock fan for some extra h.p. also? it cools ok at highway driving but will get pretty hot here in houston at idle. thanks in advance.

You will have better luck running a 7 blade
factory fan with a clutch fan. Don't use a thermal clutch. Make sure your cooling system is up to the task. A fan shroud is a must. Do you have a 4-row radiator? Are you running a 160 thermostat? I have run cars with both. I also reside in TX. Been there and done that. Let me know more about your car and cooling system. That way I can help you better.

more on my cooling system and car.
freshly rebuilt 400 with rpm intake and .50 lift cam. only power steering puts a drag on the motor, no a/c or anything else.

4 row stock Harrison radiator which was sent out and cleaned. no fan shroud on this goat. only the metal shroud that sits on top to keep hands out. i have always known this to be a problem.

t-stat is a 180 degree. car runs 200-210 but at idle here in houston has no chance. before the rebuild didnt have near the problem but had some. the extra horsepower is generating more heat i assume.

also what do u think of a aluminum radiator? also an option. i just want the car to run cool for reliability and keep the motor running strong for a long time to come. thanks for your reponse. bye.

Your best bet is to go with GM OEM cooling system all the way. There is no better cooling system for your car. The only thing you can do better than that is go to an aluminum radiator and you don't need one. I I would start with getting a shroud from Performance Years or find a used one for your car. Then get a Robert Shaw 160 thermostat. That may solve your problem. The shroud is most improtant while sitting in traffic or at slow speed.

The first thing I would check is the thermostat, I have seen brand new ones that are defective. My 65 GTO use to puke after running it about five minutes in AZ and it had a brand new thermostat in it. It took me a while to figure out how to make my car run cool, I have a 4 core radiator in it and it still ran hot. I finaly put a 160 degree thermostat in it and a Flex-a-lite plastic fan, the fan is good for 8000 rpms and dosen't weigh much, the fan pulls air through the radiator like crazy and now my car runs at 190 degrees at idle in AZ in the summer time and I don't even have a shroud on it.

Run a 160 thermostat. Buy a repro fan shroud. Run the nonthermal fan clutch/with a 7 blade fan. The reason I like a nonthermal fan clutch is that after 2000rpm it freewheels. So at highway speeds it won't disrupt the flow of air. I have had cars that like to run hot on the highway. With a thermal clutch fan. As per the article in hotrod it is one of the least horsepower robbing next to an electric fan. Plus the cost and headache of installing/wireing an electric. I run this combination on my 70 With a built 400, th350 with 3:73 posi in 100+ temps and run at 180.
