Body Cart
Has anyone had any experience building a body cart out of wood? I'm looking at taking the body off the frame but since the budget is small I can't swing all the money for a body cart or rotisserie. If it's possible is there a design plan for one? Will it hold up enough to do body work on the car while it's on the cart?
Any help would be great.

This worked well for me.
I built it high enough to roll the chassis in and out from under. The only change I would have made is to make all 4 wheels swivel, instead of just 2 |

mine is over kill....I like the one above that lets the frame roll under. If I had to do again that's the way I would go!!

Thanks for all the help. I actually broke down and ordered a body cart, got a really good deal on one. After pricing all the materials I was over halfway to the price of the cart I ordered.

Have built several '68-72 A-body 112" wb body dollies over the years from cut off A-body frames that weren't #1 condition used frames. Rustfree clean frames that had an issue up front, is what have used. Cutoff in front of the "jog" right in front of the cowl, it only takes a few hours to cut & fab legs out of square tubing, weld a small piece of plate on the bottoms of the legs for the casters, as well as weld a piece of channel across the front.
Once I get through my culling my current stack of frames, will be building another such dolly, this time with slide in legs. Am to the point, I need a body dolly with larger diameter rubber tires, so can roll off the concrete, across the hard ground, as well as up onto the car trailer.

I had all the lumber laying around already so just had to buy the rollers. Later I ended up buying a set of solid wheels.

I used some casters and scrap steel.
Rolled it anywhere over about anything, even sent it off on a truck to have some work done.

Here is the company I ordered from https://www.accessiblesystems.com/bc/bc.php
The guy that is helping me along the way with my restoration has a rotisserie from the same company and the customer service and quality is great!

Here's a little more info on the cart/buck. Local guy built it to restore his 70 GTO, I was going to make a few changes and use on my 66, but I'm going with a whirly jig now. I can take pictures this weekend. Best to send PM with #. Thanks, Dave

Steel cart
I have about $350 in materials on this one. It's universal with sliding attachment points so that different cars can go on it. Plus extensions for the front to support an assembled front end.
The height is adjustable and that helps in the paint booth. |
