X2!!! I was a solid lifter guy and flat tappet cams for many years even though I had at least two "streetable" roller cams on the shelf. I chose to run a flat tappet HO Racing camshaft from Camshaft machine Company and a set of hydraulic Rhoads lifters in the 64 GTO my son will be driving. 455 engine.

Not regretting that decision for a second.

I suppose he's afraid of a Flat Hydraulic Lifter issue. So what cam? He sad he has Crower Lifters 66260, but doesn't know what cam to get. Don't think he wants more performance , just reliability, but if HP goes up, I don't think he will complain about it. I was thinking a Butler RAIV Retro with the solid roller? and ideas? What about Valve Springs? I ASSUME they need to be changed? Don't want to be pulling heads, just a cam swap and new timing chain gears. I don't know what he has for a cam , I dont even think he knows, sounds a little more than stock. He bought it that way.
He would love my old street solid roller I originally used in my 400 68 GTO (auto w 2.93 gear) Ultradyne (by Bullett) the smallest one. adv 279/290 242/252 @ 050 LSA 112 ICA 106or 107 .556 .556 about .540" net after lash with 1.5 // its was super streetable daily driver never came out of adjustment put a couple thousand miles on it with crane solid roller and zero mods to oiling. Currently still in my 11 sec 455 Catlalina 455 combo but coming out this year when my fresh 467 stroker block goes in with a bigger one

solid roller and not pulling heads and isn't good. I planned mine on my #16's 68 heads and went to longer RA IV valves to give me tons of room for high lift and tall proper spring set up. went with a a Herbert spring #175 on seat which is listed for solid roller and seems mild but has always worked flawless but I also never revved it past 6200 but I also did titanium 10 degree retainers.. the tall springs got also matching longer thick wall butler pushrods all of it 14 years or so later still working flawless

That cam Larry shared above. It's listed in the Pontiac section of my old UltraDyne catalog. Their description states:

"very streetable, 2500SS converter. Broad torque curve."

I don't have a ton of miles on my hybrid but have checked/changed the lash 3 times more out of curiosity than anything else and this has been exactly my experience as well.

Yep its true I had a Hughes HD BOP GM25 12" 2500 rated converter worked good with 14" tires and 2.93's with that cam in my old GTO. Also on a road trip to race the Pontiac event in Tulsa back then I managed almost 15 MPG with that roller and my trusty 800 Quadrajet

I still got the converter behind our hot rod farm truck 74 C10 454 w 3.07 gear
