I have a 70 gp w/455 w/ #64 ported heads.I'm running long branch manifolds and stock intake and carb.and 2500 stall with 331 gears. I called comp cams and they recommended the 262 EX. Does that sound like a good choice for that motor or should I go with a little bigger cam. It will be driven just on weekends w/ occasional strip.

I would consider the XE 268 or even the XE 274. XE 262 is too small for the converter and gears and heads that you have.

I have the same cam in my 72 GTO 400 with 4 speed 323 gears headers complete with 2 1//2 exhaust. The cam is great for the street pulls hard to above 5000rpm with a slight lope at idle.If you are planning to run the strip you might want to go little larger with your compression ratio mine is 8:5.1

i guess this like like apples to oranges, but i thought a pontiac would take more cam than a small block chevy. i have a xe262 in my 350 camaro and it is a great stock cam replacement. i mean it goes really nice, but its not what i would call anywhere near a hot rod. i think it could be a hell of alot faster and sound better. i heard an engine with an xe268 in it and it sounded WAAAAY better than my motor. it loped! i have had 292 adv. duration cams in a sbc and it was more like it: total street strip.
i would think that you could go alot bigger, but i know as much about pontiac engines as i do about women.

bullheimer makes a good point...the XE 268 is the standard hi-po street cam for the small block chevy (350-383)....your 455 can definitely go up to the XE 274 and maintain good street manners.

My opinion, it won't lope but it will rip the tires off. It should get you past 5000 RPM. I think that the guys from Comp would know. I have heard negative things about he 268, but nothing but good from the 262 and 274. By the way, where in Chesapeake, used to be stationed at Northwest, lived in Great Bridge. LOL Bill

I'm in western branch of Ches. I already have the cam and the springs are already on the heads. I guess I'll give it a try and I can always change it out. Thanks for the info.

Depends on what you are after. If the car is strictly for cruising/burnouts, it'll do the job with plenty of low end. If you actually want to go fast, go minimum xe274, more like xe284 (he has ported heads on a 455 here guys, xe262 is TINY for that setup).

The 363 in my low compression 400 with a TIGHT convertor had some lope. I know a biggger cam would be better for your 455. The XE274 has similar specs @ 0.050 as a RAIV/041 which is a popular 455 cam.

Dont waste your time with the 262, go with the 274 and never look back,,,,Im running the 274 in my car...had 8.1-1 compression ran a best of 12.80@106...swapped heads and compression is now 10-1 and car ran best of 12.70@105..with the modulator valve unplugged and car not pulling past 4500 and the weather was 90 degrees with about 90% humidity...should go 12.50 with cool weather and running right...go with the 274
my car idles at 750 in gear and the lope aint crazy...great street cam.

I agree with bobzdar. Anything less than XE274 and you won't be taking advantage of your setup with ported heads and stall converter. Especially if you are going to the strip from time to time.
I just installed the XE274 in my 455 and love the way it sounds and is very streetable. I wanted to go bigger, but without the funds for a converter and gears, I figured I'd better do a progressive build.
