Default disc brake conversion

Any suggestions as to which kit is best?
Would like to convert front drums to disc on my 61 Cat.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Bruno

Probably the least expensive way is to got to your local junk yard you use for parts & see if there is a 77-85 B or C body GM car ( impala, lesabre, 88) or so on & take all the front brake parts from it spindles, rotors. calipers. hoses, master cylinder, & prop. valve. All the reg. parts you would need to swap them from that car to yours & you'll have all the parts. If you need to replace any of them you'll know which car it came from. But you should replace all the hoses. But the old parts will make a good pattern to start with .

Are 77-85 parts going to work on a 1961? The later model stuff is front steer, a 1961 had rear steer so you'd have to make some major modifications.

Stuart brings up a good point to consider. I faced a similar problem. My PO had mounted C3 Corvette brakes all around on my 61 a number of years ago. Nice idea but the front of the spindle mounted calipers interfered with the sway bar. I had to revise the mounts and make the calipers rear mount. Everything works great now but a lot of work.

People who have used Scarebird seem happy. Make it easy on yourself. Call him.

Stuart is correct - using the later B/C spindles would be an epic charlie fox; they are front steer, use different ball joints, longer steering arm, different Ackerman angle ad nauseum. We started out selling these for A bodys - a not so good solution.

bruno - if you have questions please email us direct:

and we will be glad to help.

Mark,
By all means go ahead.
If You remember correctly I had the special request to use the 1LE rotors so I could change my bolt circle to 5X4.75. I have a set of 15" steel wheels 5X5 bolt circle I am sending out to have new hoops put on so I can run them with the disc brakes. I'm going to order the 77' Bonniville rotors to run with those wheels. My question to you is the only thing I need to do is remove the outer wheel bearing bushing as the outer bearing id will work on the stock spindle correct?

correct - the 1LE use a A3 bearing, ID around 0.842 while the 77 Bonny wagon uses an A2 which is 0.750.

Used Scarebird brackets on my '65 Rambler and they worked a treat. Recommended.

Default Summit parts for disc brake conversion to -60 bonneville

Hello. What parts have you used for conversion? Im making order from Summit racing and I would like to ensure that parts are correct.

My plan is to go with following set:

Brake calibers:
http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...4039/overview/

http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...4040/overview/

Brake rotors:
http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...del/bonneville

Master cylinder:
http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...5171/overview/

Scarebird set:
https://scarebird.com/index.php?rout...&product_id=72

What do you think? Is there any better options in Summit or are these ok? Master cylinder fastening will need some modification, but that shouldn´t be a problem.

Why don't you purchase the correct power booster and master that requires no modification. I can provide the information.

This is the correct booster/bracket and master that I used on my 1960 Ventura. Notice I mounted the proportioning valve off the bracket at the firewall and made new lines from the master to the proportioning valve as there is no room for the propositioning valve off the master with the fender well so close. There is a bracket that mounts the proportioning valve under the master but then you run into brake line issues. This is the place to get the correct bracket. http://mikeschevyparts.net/ He is a member at 348-409.com http://www.348-409.com/forum/members...delivery.1494/
The bracket is the same one used on 1959-1964 Chev with 348-409.

Thanks for your answer! Only problem is that i´m making a order from summit racing anyway, I need carbs and a lot of other stuff, and postages are very high from USA to Finland. So I try got get everything from Summit in same order.

Here´s how engine room looks now before lacquer layers.

Hello everyone. I'm a new member, and working on a 60 Catalina. I've been looking into disc brakes and will use the Scarebird brackets and recommended rotors and calipers. Which master cylinder have you used for manual brakes, and what about power brakes? Prefer a bolt on upgrade w/minimum mods.

use a corvette manual brake master. If you look at the link in one of my above posts you can get the master/proportioning valve from Mike.
