Headrest Conversation Assemble For Cars That Did Not Come With Headrest: 66 - 67 GTO
Ames Performance offers headrests for 66 to 67 cars that did not come with headrest (like mine). In the G36 catalog for GTO's, page 29, part A131PY ($235.00), the description states these assemblies allow a complete conversion for 66 to 67 bucket seats. Since I'm re-upholstering my front bucket seats, this is an opportune time for this upgrade.
Has anyone done this upgrade? What are your thoughts of quality?

from an aesthetics point of view, personally I don't like them. I think the early strato buckets look much better without them. Its always a bit of a shock when I see them at a show, which makes me look... but I wouldn't have put them in my old 66.
For that matter when i first redid the buckets in my 68 chevelle in the original ivy gold, I added headrests. When i redid the seats in black last year, I removed them again. Just don't like them (unless they are supposed to be there, then it would bug me if they were missing) From a KIT point of view, they are good quality parts. I have some detailed photos taken by a friend when he did this conversion on his own seats a year or two ago- i'll attach the pics following this post. The headrest itself is obviously not original though (just like the repop 68-72 ones) because they are molded urethane rubber instead of abs plastic over the top of foam like the originals were. In years past there were issues with dying the black rubber headrests different colors... not sure if that is still an issue or not. What is important to understand, unlike the 68-72 headrests which needed tubes installed before the covers, the 66/67 style are meant as a retrofit... They go on after the covers are on. anyway, pics incoming...

Thanks Ben, great pic's. I"m still undecided but yeah, headrest may look out of place for my car.

I am interested in the headrests too. Question: After completion of the installation, the retrofit metal hardware is exposed. Was that the case on the original, from the factory Pontiac headrests? Could you see the hardware like these? Second question: Has anyone installed the shoulder belts that would go along with the headrests? Mounting brackets were installed starting sometime in 1966 model year and I know my 1967 has the hardware but not the belts. I have been thinking of doing both for a while but I have not met anyone who has done both, nor seen any final installed photos. Can anyone comment or post photos please.
