I must say that I really like the aggressive look of Bart's car! The hood design was killer.

I know my Daughter has one.

I’m thinking she’d prefer a convertible.

I know, I know, everyone has an opinion and I just don't care for plain red cars. Others love them.

But a 455 vs a 400 is a no brainer to me.

Okkkkk

Well this ones a no go! to many things that don’t jive. No PHS documentation, drivers door replaced, rust under the passenger door, car has been re painted, but advertised as touched up, new decals, over spray in the engine compartment, and door jams, one rear tire was completely blown out the side on display that way. They couldn’t explain the transmission swap, has a lot going on for a low mileage car, and they were not really interested in hearing all the things we found wrong, in order to make a fair value offer. Original owner is a flipper. This one could definitely be made nice, but we’re not after another project. I don’t think the salesman liked that we knew so much about these cars, when we pointed out all of it’s faults. We weren’t able to drive it or even see it up on a lift. If we wanted that we had to make an appointment and come back. It did look real pretty under the lights, but just not “the one”

Always amazing what doesn't show up in the pictures .
It actually looked good in the trunk jambs and fender jambs - in the pictures.

I guess Both of the fender vent screens were Red then.

Did you throw them any kind of numerical offer ?

Yes both painted and over spray through the vents. Yes we told them $25k they said they wouldn’t even call the owner on that offer.

! ! !

That was a VERY courteous and kind offer IMO - especially with more being revealed.
If they can't call the owner on that offer - he probably won't be getting any calls at all.

Then again, they are probably holding out for that sight-unseen long distance buyer over the phone , who is just looking at pretty pictures.

Too bad you couldn't have wasted more of their time with a test drive and lift inspection.

There's a good car, out there, that's just not the one!!!

I wanted a silver TA. Glad a silver one was not on the lot, when I bought mine. THe silvers cars of the era, all makes, had terrible problems with silver paint, for some reason. Man that silver 76 looks nice!

It was worth looking at as it’s not that far from home. That car was repainted not just touched up, and I’m sure the driver door was replaced, as well as the two sill plates which were raised up because there was rust under them. The package tray was fine factory flush speakers, the radio fit very well and is a Delco there were no cuts in the dash. The door panels were painted over and chalky to the touch dried out. There was a lot of red over spray under the hood. And he couldn’t answer why the tranny was swapped with that mileage. He kept avoiding that, and changing the subject. I told him about several e bay cars, he said all e bay cars are junk, and I laughed and said..... so this car is junk? He said what? I said .....you do know you just had this car on e bay and didn’t get your price stopped at $16k? He didn’t know what to say.

The way this place is laid out in an old indoor mall, and the cars are packed in there, they use dollies to move them around, and only do so during the closed hours. This car also had a shredded rear tire the steel belts hanging out the side wall. We were there 3 hours. He said when it sells they will replace the tires. Ha be you seen the site? I’d you’ve ever been to an indoor mall, cars are in the center of the mall as well as in the individual stores that were there once.

Check it out it’s a huge place!

Myself personally, would not buy anything from a consigner/dealer/flipper. There are a lot of cars out there with honest owners. You have to be patient.
Pontiac events and car shows are the best place to find a good deal.

Yes it is massive right in the heart of Amish country so a lot of people visit. There’s a Holiday Inn attached and a McDonalds outside. They have a car corral out back and a bone yard. Every Wednesday they have a car show in the evening. We have been there before but never to buy a car, and I don’t know anyone personally who has either so this was a new buying experience at this place. The Salesman never was rude, but you could tell he was un comfortable with us knowing as much as much as we did and he was the dealer there who consigned this car. We showed him things he admitted he did not know about. Yes we were very thorough and I think it made him un comfortable.

He does have my number just in case the owner decides to counter offer.

No didn't look around that much.
45k would be on the cheap - it must be FULL of penalty markers

So i went back and looked at the Red 74 SD
it was brought up on the forum before when it was on eBay.
Has its fair share of penalties, plus a few extra

The White 74 TA 400 4spd unrestored looks to be the Best TA , and maybe even Best Car they have.
Too bad you and yours aren't interested in a 74
The asking price seems "fair" too

of course i'm not forgetting these are the people you just dealt with, and it just about has to be 30-35% over-priced for what is actually sitting there.

Several comments: I am glad you didn't buy this car. You are knowledgeable and knowledge is POWER. You just proved it. When you presented a laundry list of defects and things that didn't add up and many things these idiots didn't even know about, you had a huge advantage. All the dealer can do at that point is be courteous, hope you aren't talking too loud where others can hear and get you out the door before another sale is lost. These dealers of "collector cars" ALWAYS seek to make a killing. They convince the consignee that only "their expert staff of professional salespeople", can extract maximum blood from the buyer. Of course that will come at a considerable price. These dealers are NEVER a good deal financially for the buyer. You have shown on this forum exactly what you want and expect and that car is waiting somewhere out there, hopefully in private hands. Best of luck with your search. Thank you for exposing another one of these dealers for what they are, peddlers of marginal junk at BIG prices.
