Thanks for listing the Pontiacs. It was nice to see a Firebird Sprint go for over 40K. IMO, they deserve the recognition they are finally getting. Overall, the prices don't look as crazy as some of the Mecum results lately.

My take from the auction- inflation has hit everything. Very, very few cars for less than 25k.

Trucks are still hot- too hot!

Restomods are bringing the same money as ultra rare cars. 70 Ram Air IV TA was $140k, restomod that probably wasn’t really a TA sold for $139k.

More restomods with original style motors- not everything has an LS or LT in it.

The 1989 TTA finally had its day!

Grand Nationals now start at $50k

Big high end 50’s cars are still pulling respectable numbers.

64-67 GTO’s did well with almost everything being over 50k for a driver and in the hundreds for a high end build.

Hellcats are going up- fast. One exactly (down to color, options, etc) like my wife’s daily went for $110k. Red Eyes we’re going for even more.

It was a fun time- much more focus on the attendee enjoying the show than Mecum. Mecum seems to only be about the buyer and seller whereas Barrett Jackson wants you to bring your family, friends and drink beer all day.

The 70 Ram4 Auto TA , and 73 SD Auto TA both seemed well bought.

Ultra low mile 94 Anny TA Vert brought about what it sold for new.
That was a Deal

79 TA 403 with ultra low miles went crazy wild @ 220k
Scratch my head , and wish them well !

Just a shout out to the 69 RA3 Judge sold for $275k! Nice restoration and car has its original drivetrain, starter, alternator, carb... but that is incredible money for a ra3 car.

Considering I have a similar car (not as nicely restored) I was interested in this sale.

The Turbo TA’s surprised me. Even 6 months ago low Mike examples were 30k - now they are twice that. I figured between Iroc-Z pricing and GN pricing they would see an increase but that’s significant.

I think it will be very interesting to track the current "Hot, Hot,Hot", restomods over the next 10 years. Since this group of cars are really a recent fad, how well they age out as an investment should be fun to watch. Tastes change, styling changes and technology moves forward. Take a look at some of the 10-20 year old highly modified cars in Hot Rod magazine, Car Craft. Are they still extremely "Hot", desirable, valuable", today. We shall see. Cool and fun to drive, YES. Good future investment grade cars?, I certainly don't know. I do know what old race cars are worth, even restored name cars. Almost nothing with very rare exceptions.

Way nicer watching BJ over mecum. All the busy colors mecum uses, the mecum cast, just do t like mecum auctions.

I dont think any of the restomods are investment grade cars. You need to step up to the big boy game with the full classics, vettes, Italian and German stuff for investment. Those kind of cars will always have a market. A lot of these are right for the moment. Your assessment on the 20 yr old hot rod stuff is correct. Some cars are the thing to have and get stupid money. Broncos are that thing right now. It will take a couple of years for them to cool off, but once everyone with stupid money has theirs the market on that particular car will subside. When the next 'fad' in cars comes along they will be sold off cheaply, or parked in the back of a large car barn to make room for the next 'fad'.

The restomods only bring $$$ when their styling is somewhat conservative. You can't always be sure that others will find the same appeal in your vision as you do. Aside from that, you got modern convenience and reliability with the vintage styling and feel, so it's hard to go wrong with them.

I'll never understand that '79 car, man. Aside from the black paint, there's nothing really going for it sans the mileage. 403/Auto, no AC, hardtop, standard interior... not a big pedigree at all. The W72 solar gold that went for 100k+ makes more sense. I'm grateful to own mine, and it's nice knowing their values are going up in a way, but at the same time I never want to sell mine. It's my dream car, and so its value is irrelevant. And now, to see these late 70's Trans Ams become unattainable to the average buyer is kind of saddening. They used to be an everyman's car; an easy starter classic to get behind the wheel of. Now? Not so much. Conversations will go from wrenching on them and hunting for parts to "investing" in them and speculating prices. When I pull up to meets in my '79, I don't want to be looked at as the snobby collector guy. No likey.

At the same time its nice to know you would stand a better chance of getting some of your money back (if the value skyrockets) and you crash it.

My dream car is constantly hunted by deer around here...gives me anxiety

Fools and their money are soon parted. Seems that most people aren't interested in driving these cars, having only an interest in how much they appreciate. They have escalated the prices so that the average person who still wants to DRIVE these cars simply can't afford them.

Agree with auction cars completely. Having helped "restore" engines on a couple high dollar old Mustangs, sellers just want the original parts to go back into the engines if at all possible. That includes piston rings and bearings. They are OK with replacing gaskets, but that's about all. Camshafts, valve train, timing chains and sprockets, starters, alternators, anything with a date code. They want all that worn out junk put back in if at all possible. We are talking about 6 figure cars here. If the thing will start, idle and make it across the auction block, that's good enough. I would never buy an auction car I intended to drive without a detailed receipt of every thing that went into the mechanical "restoration" if that occurred.

The non-driving part really hit home for me when I went to the Trans Am Nationals last year. I bet a full 90% of the cars were hauled to Dayton in a trailer? Really? Talk about a car that begs to be driven.

This truck sold earlier last year in BAT for less than 50K. Resold on BJ for 165K. Absolutely insane.

I heard a guy talking about a nomad that was 'perfectly' restored, won high points where ever it was shown and def. a trailer car. The owner dropped it off to this guy because the motor wasnt quite right when he unloaded if off the trailer to park on the show field. The guy said that the parts inside the motor werent even tightened down, and had not been well built at all. On the outside the motor looked perfect! Guy was surprised it even ran long enough to park!!

This is why (I mentioned in another thread) I will ask auction prices when it is time to sell.

I have a friend that bought a GT500 from one of the exclusive collections at Barrett Jackson a few years ago. Another car at a shop bumped it and they pulled the front apart to fix it and found hardware store washers and bolts holding it together where you couldn’t see. Another friend bought a Pantera last year for almost $200k. It ran hot, AC didn’t work, kept dying, all kinds of issues.

The security of being able to ride in, drive and feel a car while testing everything out is what you don’t get at these auctions and honestly I will charge for it when it comes time to sell. If I don’t get what I want I can always run it through the auction….
