Exclamation eBay 67

Figured I'd post a warning for this one:

All that documentation won't do a lick of good if a cop sees these tags...

Looking at the photos of the restoration process, the one of the body appears to have the data tag missing (pretty fuzzy photo).

Not commenting on this either way because its obvious things have been altered from origional. Looking @ this made me think. My question is if you have a body acid dipped would or could the tags be affected by the acid being the material is thinner than most panels ? Just made me wonder. If I had a verrry rare piece would I risk loosing any vital info to the tank ? I know sandblasting is always an option but say I wanted all the rust removed ? Hmmmmmmm. Being 5.0 for 8yrs I know per the law its a federal crime. Just made me wonder if I found a copo camaro or a 1 of 1 judge convertible that was rusted very bad what would I do.

I have heard that acid baths do destroy vin plates (because of the metal they are made from). I know some acid baths errode aluminum like it was hot butter. But still the original rosette style rivets are available (look in hemmings - there must be a million ads for them) and if they weren't used it shows a poor attention to detail.

I don't removing data plates are considered illegal - just the vin plate. Another component of removing vin's being considered illegal is whether doing it is going to commit some kind of fraud. If the vin tags are removed and then placed right back on the same car I don't think it is an issue. Bodyshops repairing firewalls or old door jambs on wrecked cars do it if the area requires a patch. IT really becomes an issue when you are putting the vin plates on something other than the body of the car they came off of.

Edit: In the early to mid 90's most restoration shops could stamp their own data plates if they wanted. Usually this was done when a customer wanted to change the color of his car to something he liked better (I know at least one 63 splitwindow fuelie that is sliver but started life white). 99% of the shop owners were pretty scruplious about it and would only do it for color changes, but all will deny it as a common practice.
