Safe t track
Going to look at a posi unit out of 65 gto
At a reasonable price. I have 3:23 gears so I need a 3 series unit correct. He says it is. How can I be sure. A measurement from bearing to ring seat? Are these rebuildable. As hard as they are to come by and this one being local and priced right I hate to miss out |

Contact Monzaz here on the forum. I've had no dealings with him, but he has a pretty good reputation here on the forum. I plan on contacting him about rebuilding one for me here in the next year or so.

If you have an open diff, you can fit a PowerTrax NoSlip into your existing open centre.

72Pontiac, you will need a Mid Ratio Pontiac 8.2 carrier.
Will get you a measurement.

Usually the posi chunks have 2 rows of bolts around where the ring gear bolts on.
And peg-legs just one row. So verify that feature I think the thickness of the flange where the ring gear bolts on is a key factor to determine which series the carrier is. OPH will know way more about all of this than I do. just chiming in , fwiw |

This forums not what it used to be. Good or bad responses all sorts of people would give there 2 cents. So I committed to buy what I hope is a mid series carrier that I hope is good and I hope my 3:23 ring and pinion are good. I've made worse mistakes before so be it.

Sorry for the delay, just got this post in digest:
I bought a new posi and installed it with used 3.23 gears in my 8.2 rear for my 65 GTO; works great, totally quiet. It was an Auburn and they now list an Eaton and a Yukon. https://www.ronsmachiningservice.net/gm-8-2-bop-2/ Might be better than taking a chance on a used posi, in this case I just had to be sure the used gears would set up with a good pattern and they did. Hope this helps. Last edited by tallrandyb; 01-11-2022 at 01:23 PM. Reason: old link was wrong |

No, not stuck with it.
As I said earlier, you can use the PowerTrax NoSlip, almost unbreakable. They fit the non-posi centre, does not disturb the ring & pinion, can be done without removing the assy from the car, done in 45 min. |

Auburn Pro makes the only new Series 2 8.2 P 10 bolt unit for 2.93-3.08-3.23 gear, also it should be the smaller bolt size of 64-68. vs the new Eaton series 3 3.36-3.55-+++ unit. I was fortunate to find a good used series one (2.56-2.78) 69-72 unit (larger bolts LHT) for our 2.56 LeMans.. We still have good luck width good used originals but as always results may vary..

I would much rather have a cone type posi than a clutch type. Less parts to fail & I would imagine the cone type would be less touchy about the type of LSD additive needed.

Guess I'm stuck with a one wheel squeel
I told the guy no. You all talked me out of it. It was either good or it was bad we'll never know |

Just build a normal Corporate 8.5 from a 71-72 Skylark/Cutlass and open the door to endless new and used parts readily available.

So what is the option for someone with a factory 3.23 posi (‘64) who wants to keep their original differential?

Or that thing mentioned in the #27 post Or a spool or keep an open rear end I've seen them from $500-$900 asking I thought $225 was a steal. But I was told out to it. If it was no good I would have eaten $225 and stayed open or spent equal to or more on another option |

The guy said he bought it as a good working unit. He will let me take it and have it checked out. What you all think about it, based on that.
