65 Console Shifter Boot Replacement
I need to replace the rubber shifter boot in my 1965 GTO. Do I need to remove the entire console or can you just remove the metal shifter housing to access the boot?
I appreciate the help. |

Removing the console is not that big of a deal and it gives you easy access to the rubber shifter boot.

You can't remove the housing without removing the console, unless you installed yours without the speed nuts holding it in place.

Be sure you remove the two screws at the very forward top area of the console before you pull up on it. I’ve seen several where the person didn’t do that and bent and cracked the forward portion of the console trying to remove it while the two screws were holding it in.

Light Harness
If your glove box light and rear courtesy if you have one don't work now is a good time to fix them. Bob.

Also, when you go to reinstall the console you may find that finding the screw holes in the floor pan through the carpet to be quite difficult. If that is the case, stick an ice pick through the screw hole in the console and then through the hole in the floor pan to line them up.

Good luck on the new boot. The new one I ordered years ago split in two in about 6 months and was so stiff it was hard to shift. I ended up re-installing the original boot and it's been there since. One small hole, but not bad for 57 years of service, and still shifts fine.
