Another thing to add in the mix of things to measure / verify -
the size of the bolt holes that secure the ring gear to the carrier. There is Early and Late as mentioned in a previous post already. To keep in mind, just because the seller states the rear came OUT of a 65 GTO , does not guarantee the rear was the original in that 65.. Differentials get swapped around and it could have been a 69 Differential ,,, for all anyone knows. Ideally you want the bolt holes to be the same as your existing Early ring gear bolt holes. To avoid any deeper modifications or buying another ring & pinion set (Later Version) |

There is a measurement from my open 8.2 carrier from my 71 Lemans. It had 3:08 gears on it.

There’s one more picture measuring from the other end.

I measured 1-7/8" on my 2.93-3.23 posi carrier. If you have a '65 carrier, it will have 3/8" ring gear bolts.

Rather than 7/16 bolts on a later style?

Correct, the change was sometime in 1969. The Eaton clutch style posi (3.36-4.10) comes with the 3/8" holes so if you use a 7/16" ring gear you have to drill the carrier.

What are the cone viewing windows? You can't see the cones from the outside in either of the 2 or 4 pinion posi's. You need to unbolt and separate the carrier to see the cones.

Ok. Another style/make has windows you can see if the cones are bottomed out this one is after the repair and the cone isn't even into the window

Well I decided to buy it as he said I could have it check out and I have access to a lathe and felt comfortable I could make it good if it wasn't. Told him I wanted it but just tested positive for covid and as soon as I was over it I would come get it he said sounds great. 5 minutes ago he messaged he sold it. Oh well.

I just bought an Auburn posi unit for a 8.2" BOP that will fit a 3:08 gear. Got it through Summit Racing about two weeks ago and it's already installed in a 67' GTO that has the original rear end in it.

If you want to keep your current housing do this. If not, get a 12 bolt or '71-72 Olds 8.5".

Power Trax is a good option and easy to install. Never used one, but feedback I've seen says they act like a Detroit locker which would be fine with me. Then you don't have to change the carrier and set it up.

If you really really want an Auburn posi for a 3.23 8.2 right now and you want to buy one from Sweden, these guys claim they have two:
https://www.hansenracing.se/produkt/...ffsparr-598530 That converts to US $855. And they replied to my email inquiry and said shipping would be $100 "International Economy". |

I wonder why the product code changed or if there is a change in the internals. The Auburn I bought was a 5420114, these are showing 546099. Last edited by tallrandyb; 01-16-2022 at 02:01 PM. Reason: product codes |
