I agree, some nice stuff Hoov-D. We are alike in our background. Much of it is just trial, error, learn from it, and then you have the experience.

Personally, I hate body and paint work, and would rather do the mechanical stuff and turn wrench's.

But the Body and Paint will make or break the car, esp at the car shows.

I used probably all the different types of paints, from Lacquer, to Imron, to Enamels, to the latest Acrylic Urethanes.

I built the Camaro attached, mostly fiberglass panels, and did the Baldwin Motion paint thing. In custom mixed Radiance Lacquer to boot. Yeah - not very durable, but easy to work with.
Newer cars, like my 5th Gen Camaro, just need a good buffing out, and Meguiars wax.

I like the car club idea. Nice way to spread the work around without getting to bogged down and overwhelmed with a project on your own. Plus, others learn from each other.

I've done it both ways.

I had a 77 T/A hood that was pretty wavy, so I mixed a big batch of Rage Gold up and thinned it out with plastik honey until it was super thin. Did a quick coating over the entire hood, blocked it out and it was smooth as glass. Hit it with a high build primer and blocked that out and it was a mirror finish.

Yep, I started with lacquer in the late 60s all the way to the 90s before I changed to modern stuff. Did a lot of flake, pearls, lace, cob webbing, fading.
Never took pics, like we do today. Who'da thunk we would want to look at 'em now? Nice cars by the way!

You almost have to start with one guy that knows mechanical, electrical, fabrication, interior and body. Then it snowballs from there as everybody learns. Everybody develops different skills that they are comfortable with. I was lucky that most people stuck around. We've lost a couple along the way, but I still have a passion for this stuff.

Dulux….XIM…..Snowball filler….nitrostan…you cut lacquer with 600 ( finest paper out then) then buff. Big Deal about Factory Pack pints of Lacquer…. Made paint on a Triple Beam scale….and no Mig welder…the good ol days

What a fantastic way to learn new skills, share the workload/restoration process and experience the comradery of the hobby I would absolutely love to be part of such a group here in NC, but like you said, it requires that one guy with most all the skills to start. I gotta imagine finding that guy who is willing is like a needle in a haystack.

I know a little about a lot, but certainly not all the skills needed.

HoovDaddy, some nice work there. I have often thought what it would be like to have a group of like minded people putting their efforts together to build a car. Sounds like you should write the manual! Great Idea!!

This car was one of our builds and the entire body had been skim coated, it was a mess. It doesn't look like a bad car in the first (before) pic when it was resale red. But it was in horrible shape under all that bondo, because bondo applied over bare metal absorbs moisture really fast, and rust bubbles started appearing a couple years after he bought the car. A lot of work to bring this one back correctly. I never apply bondo over bare metal, always acid wash and epoxy prime first. Replaced the entire rear end.

Here is a sad story. Bought this Camaro over 40 years ago, sat in my garage forever. Finally went to town on it about 5 years ago. Body was trash so I put fiberglass panels on it, flares, the works. Endless Body work.
Shot it with Radiance Lacquer Paint with Flakes and Alsa Corp Brand Purple and Blue and Silver Pearls - best stuff out there, just visit their web site. Wore my old Bell Bottom Jeans and was playing Bee Gees while painting it
Lots 'O taping and sanding.
Finished it, and sold it to my Bro.
2 weeks later, he "modified" it
Lesson is, learn how to drive a serious car, and don't drink while driving!

I ran (4) remote oil filters up front - (2) dual remote adapters connected together and plumbed off the oil filter housing on the block. An old "Smokey Yunick" racing tip.

2 Goodmark quarters and tail panel. You can see the LH quarter was 3 pieces and the previous spread bondo on those seams and sanded smooth inside the trunk so you couldn't see or feel them.

We built a 383 stroker for it, rebuilt the trans, new wiring, suspension, interior, etc.

It’s always a crap shoot …buying a car. Heck..I was putting a nose ( GM 3 piece) on a 73 vette….and was grinding out some other areas ,and sparks started shooting out from the grinding disc ! Someone had pop riveted a piece of sheet metal in there…lol
