That is great news. Can't wait to see what the printed intake looks like.

Great news Tom.
Out of curiosity do you know if 2 Holleys with side hung floats will fit inline on one of these?

I've owned a real bathtub and currently own a Dave Johnson repop and can say no way would two Holleys fit inline on either one. I would have to measure but the spacing between the carbs is basically the same as on the 542991/9770859 inline sd intakes.

Can you elaborate a bit, tell me what I'm looking at, is it stuck to the silver piece, part of the mold?

One step back right, good thing it's baby steps..., I'm still impressed by the picture, looks awesome !

Especially looking at it along side the scan you posted earlier, thanks for the update.

Tom, out of curiosity, how long did it take to print the top? I have no idea how long something like this takes.

When something is 3D printed the machine adds layers of the material and the lazer fuses it but it needs to start somewhere.Im told the next try will be with a water soluble base so when it is finished it can be separated with hot water. Not sure how long for the top but told 6 days for the intake.Tom

This is a very cool project.

I wonder if there's a plastic filament available for 3D printing that's heat resistant enough that you could just run the plastic intake, instead of having to use it as a mold for an aluminum one...after all, lots of modern cars are using plastic intakes these days.

no fuel in a modern intake as they use port efi to deliver the gas

Plastic as said can work dry.The guy that is helping with this project worked at Edelbrock and they did the same deal. They could get a few dyno pulls off a wet plastic but took a lot of prep with a solvent inside and outside to kind of melt the plastic.Would never work on a driving intake unless direct injected. This is being done only to confirm the scan is accurate enough to order patterns for casting.Tom

I can't speak for everyone, but I think that most people interested in this manifold would want it cast in aluminum even if a plastic one could work. The idea is to make it look as close to GM as possible to keep the vintage look. A lot of guys who are into our Pontiacs are not as well versed as others on the bathtub intakes and would not be able to tell the differences between an original and a good repop. Of course, the ones following this thread closely could. When you go to a show with other makes, the Chevy, Ford and Mopar guys would be completely fooled. A plastic intake would be a dead giveaway.

You do not get the wall wetting as much with EFI vs with a carb BUT you still get some fuel reversion back up the runners to the plenum, even with EFI.

This info is based in inserting a camera inside the plenum of the intakes we tested in Research.

You also get water condensation (from the cool air from the intercooler (before the throttle body and the plenum/runners at some rpm points). That condensation of water typically finds the closest intake runner and is drawn into that runner at some cruising speeds. A bit of rpm changer or a different rpm point and the water is absorbed back into the fresh air charge and the water disappears.

I'm assuming the medium a 3d printer uses is as much a factor in the time frame as is the size and structure of the object being made, a intake's got allot of mass.

Appreciate the info and insight, I'd love to be a fly on the wall. It's a little like the R&D that went into the original Bathtub, only newer technology, much thanks Tom.
