Default Engine ID help.

When I went to pick up the trailer I bought from my buddie's wife she asked me if I wanted an engine that he had bought about 15 to 20 years ago. I paid her what she wanted for it and now I need to know what it is.
I know it is a Chevrolet and I think it is a 327.
Stamped on the passenger side pad is TO503HCR and under that is 724. On the back drivers side are raised GM 3858180. Above that is D21 8. On the rear passenger side is a large 7 and just under it is ?onvey 1(? on the 1).
On the back of the block is a Large Z followed by a T over an H9 then 180 over 810.
One head has GM33 and 8998993 over 1252. The other head has a GM40 and 8998993 over 1262.
That is all the numbers I could find. I can upload pictures later if needed.
There is no carb or distributor but it does have a Weiand Stealth intake on it. It also came with a set of block hugger headers.
When I pulled the valve covers off the rockers and heads were very clean.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Lots of help here: https://nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.html

Your engine is a 1965 Tonawanda-built 327, originally installed in a full-size Chevrolet with 4 barrel carb and Powerglide automatic trans.
I didn't look at heads yet.

From another website I was told that the 993 heads were built in September, 1972 for the 73 year models. I was also told that the R at the end of the ID number stood for Rochester 4 bbll carb. I wonder what compression is with those heads? I turned the motor over with a 5/8" box end wrench and it moved freely. If it checks out I will use it in my 39 Pontiac project.

I've checked some resources, as my only connection to Chevy small blocks, my dad had a few Impalas including a couple '68s, at least one with the 327, it was the car he owned when I got my license.

I believe D21 8 would be the cast date for the block but I'm thinking the 8 might actually be a 6. Pretty sure, like Pontiac, Chevy began stamping the partial VIN next to the code stamping you found in the '68 Model Year. If no partial VIN stamping, then most likely it came out of an earlier car.

Also, the stamping suffix code, HCR, seems to only correspond to a '66 application. That year, a 3 character suffix code was used, the 3rd character indicating the carb used. The R meant it got the Rochester Quadrajet (H would have meant a Holley was used).

The T means it was assembled at the Tonawanda Engine Plant. At least one of my dad's '68s had a decal on the valve cover proclaiming the engine was from the Tonawanda Plant, "Chevrolet's #1 Engine Plant" or words to that effect. Impressed the socks off of me as a young teen. Later I learned that the decal pretty much just meant that the Tonawanda Plant assembled more engines than any other Chevy Engine Plant.

0503 denotes the date it was assembled, May 3rd 1966 if I am correct about the misread of the cast date.

Chevy used certain block castings (p/ns) for years so without a partial VIN stamp, the only way to really know the Model Year is from the cast date and in the case of a '66, that 3rd character in the suffix.

3858180 is indeed a 327 casting. It was used from 1964 thru 1967 (another clue that the cast date is probably D21 6 for April 21, 1966. Note the April 21 cast date aligns well with the May 3rd assembly date.

In '66, the HCR 4 bbl 327 was rated 275 gross HP and was coupled to a Powerglide (the combo my dad had in the last '68 he had). The listing shows that it was a "passenger car" engine application so it isn't certain what particular Chevy passenger car it was coupled to. I don't know if Chevy engines were interchangeable between the Chevelle and full size or the Chevy II for that matter, so that is the best I can tell you.

From what I can tell the heads were used on US engines from '71 - '76. Then they were casting them in Mexico in the '80s for some over the counter engines so who knows their origin. They were once thought of as pretty decent performance heads when worked, Lingenfelter was using them at that time. But now there are so many better choices. According to references they have 76 cc chambers and came with 1.94/1.50 valves, assuming they haven't already been modified.

I'm thinking the 1252 and 1262 might be date codes. If so, could be the 1 (one) is an I (eye) and decode as Sept 25th and 26th of 1972, so original to an early '73 small block.

Can't help with the other cast characters on the block but pretty sure they are not real important for decode.
