Going to look at a posi unit out of 65 gto
At a reasonable price. I have 3:23 gears so I need a 3 series unit correct. He says it is. How can I be sure. A measurement from bearing to ring seat? Are these rebuildable.
As hard as they are to come by and this one being local and priced right I hate to miss out

Contact Monzaz here on the forum. I've had no dealings with him, but he has a pretty good reputation here on the forum. I plan on contacting him about rebuilding one for me here in the next year or so.

If you have an open diff, you can fit a PowerTrax NoSlip into your existing open centre.

72Pontiac, you will need a Mid Ratio Pontiac 8.2 carrier.
Will get you a measurement.

Thanks, I see jegs has a carrier for not much more than I would have to pay for this original one but again not oem. I messaged they claim it works for an 8.2 with a 3:23 gears
But I'm skepticle

Usually the posi chunks have 2 rows of bolts around where the ring gear bolts on.
And peg-legs just one row.
So verify that feature

I think the thickness of the flange where the ring gear bolts on is a key factor to determine which series the carrier is.

OPH will know way more about all of this than I do.
just chiming in , fwiw

This forums not what it used to be. Good or bad responses all sorts of people would give there 2 cents. So I committed to buy what I hope is a mid series carrier that I hope is good and I hope my 3:23 ring and pinion are good. I've made worse mistakes before so be it.

Sorry for the delay, just got this post in digest:

I bought a new posi and installed it with used 3.23 gears in my 8.2 rear for my 65 GTO; works great, totally quiet. It was an Auburn and they now list an Eaton and a Yukon.

https://www.ronsmachiningservice.net/gm-8-2-bop-2/

Might be better than taking a chance on a used posi, in this case I just had to be sure the used gears would set up with a good pattern and they did.

Hope this helps.

Well I'll be damned. I bought the Auburn from Ron's a year ago almost exactly (January 9 2021) for the 3.23 gears:

"GM 8.2" BOP Auburn HP Posi Differential 2.93-3.23 5420114" is how they listed it, for $430. So the Auburn exists out there, not sure why the Auburn would have disappeared from their listings.

I love this setup, better than the open 3.55 it had in it.

Yep I missed that on the Eaton and Yukon's, that must be why my old link to the Ron's page didn't work since they removed the Auburn for 2.93-3.23 gears.

Strange!

Before you buy the used carrier (if it is) unbolt the two halves and check if the ends of the cones are bottoming out on the carrier. If they are, they need to be machined and the cones need to be shimmed to get the correct backlash between the pinion and side gears.

Auburn Pro makes the only new Series 2 8.2 P 10 bolt unit for 2.93-3.08-3.23 gear, also it should be the smaller bolt size of 64-68. vs the new Eaton series 3 3.36-3.55-+++ unit. I was fortunate to find a good used series one (2.56-2.78) 69-72 unit (larger bolts LHT) for our 2.56 LeMans.. We still have good luck width good used originals but as always results may vary..

The reason it should be checked is that if it too worn out, it can't be rebuilt and you will be out $225. If you can't rebuild it yourself you'll have to pay and then you will be approaching the cost of a new Auburn unit.

what keeps the cones from bottoming. is it easy to check not sure if the seller can accommodate the breakdown

I would much rather have a cone type posi than a clutch type. Less parts to fail & I would imagine the cone type would be less touchy about the type of LSD additive needed.
