A few weeks ago the 428 gave up on me. Cracked the #2 main web up the oil holes and had cracks on all the rod journals on the crank. Since then I dug out an old 400 that laid in the corner of the garage just to get something running to race again. The engine was rebuilt 14 years ago but lost oil pressure and was stuck in the corner until now. It has stock rods and TRW forged pistons and has been balanced. I'm using the heads, cam, intake and carb from the race engine. The 428 (440) last time out ran 6.62 @ 104 with about 3 1/2 more points in compression and lighter Eagle rods and Ross pistons. The new (old) engine is a 406 with about 50,000 miles and a hundred or so passes down the track (well broke in but has new bearings). I'll shift it at 6,000 instead of 6400. I won't be doing much tuning on it since it's $1,000 to win. Just for fun take a guess at what it might run and I'll let you know Sunday night when I get back. I'll take my own guess Saturday night.

Anyone figure out why these blocks are cracking in this spot yet? I know someone previously had questioned the same thing. Could it be the old cranks are flexing? Might be time for a change.... Anyone use the Eagle crank?

Mitch - I purchased a new Eagle crank for my 455, but the engine isn't finished yet. I'll let you know when I've had a chance to abuse it

I'd say low 13's in the 1/4, maybe 12's with N20.

et-Ya got me- who knows.

Block cracking there= stess is my guess, pulling the two halves of the engine apart.

I saw cracks in the oil feed holes when solid side motor mounts were used, too- something's got to give somewhere.

Probrd, that 428 crank may be able to be saved, if you cut it heavy and re-mag it, to see if the cracks come out- and how deep they are. But they may not come out, and the money spent on trying to save it would be lost. The cracked block goes to the heap pile.

Ok, here's my hopeful guess: 6.90. Realistically without being able to tune on it probably around 7.08. Should be able to get it into the 6.80's with some fine tuning. I'll venture to say the only way it would run in the 13's is if it breaks one of those stock rods at half track and I had to coast the rest of the way down the 1/4. The last time this engine ran before it lost the oil pump was in this same car with stock unported 48 heads and 041 hydraulic cam it ran 12.52 and 11.78 with 125 horse shot of juice. Should run high 10's in the 1/4.

Zedo- it had the stock type rubber mounts with a chain on the drivers side head. Not real sure what caused it or how long it's been like that.

The reason is.......not enough meat to support the hp and load level achieved. Have you ever taken you two fingers and put them on both sides of the lower bore above the mains and felt the thickness and between the main and cam area? This is a good reason for using the IA block. How much did you have invested in the complete engine assembly to throw it in the corner, now go and built another assembly. You don't even have to go radical with the IA block. The cost is just the difference for work done, but you have a permanent investment.
Bore: 4.375 without fill and 4.250 with a stroker crank/cut 3/4" off the counterweights, 3" mains = 511 cu. in.
A set of Edelbrock heads flowing 335/340cfm/without widing the ports (stock type valve train), aluminum rods with lightweight pistons and pins, shift it at 6600 and run "all" year long in the low 10's or 9's depending on your camshaft/intake/carb choice.
And without NOS, hahahahahaha.
Put a hydraulic cam in it and still run low 11's on pump gas without super tuning. Hummmmmm. The price is a little more then a competitive Chevy crate motor putting out the equivalent horsepower. And who said Pontiacs aren't on the wave of competition on the street.

NOS is like American Express.....You don't leave home without it.

I believe that somebody named Mario in Philly said that...just ask Scott Rex.

Well it ran a best of 7.139 @ 96 mph and the first pass of the day was the slowest at 7.204 @ 95 mph. It was way lean due to a vacuum leak somewhere that I couldn't find. Exhaust temp was at 1550 degrees. About 200 more than it should have been. Had a hard time keeping it running in the burnout box and had to stage the car at 2500 rpm to make sure it wouldn't die. The temp guage didn't work at all so I couldn't get the temp where I wanted to every pass. All in all though Things went pretty well. I lost 6th round to get 3rd place. With 4 cars left I was the only door car. Kinda felt outnumbered. I had the dragster covered at the top end by .06 and didn't lift and broke out with a 7.139 on a 7.15 dial. Bad thing is I had it dialed 7.13 the round before.I just need to drive the other end a little bit better. I don't think I had it cooled down enough the round before the loss and it slowed to a 7.164. I guess I'll be ordering a new temperature guage in a few minutes.

Good guess J.C. looks like you were the closest. You win a great big atta boy.

atta boy. Thanx. If you would have dialed 7.10 like I computed on my super secret et module we would have been in the winners circle.

Ok Torment. You get an atta boy also! Next weekend it won't be running on the lean side though and it should run a better mph.
