My guess is the grooves on the belt were squirming around the pulley, making noise. I replaced the tensioner pulley with a grooved unit. Will test when the bad weather passes. Used 38009 (76mm) pulley. 38008 is 70mm.

I also cleaned off the tensioner pulley and used it as an idler as it was wider than the existing idler pulley.

I had a squeal on my 5.3 when I started it up. It was a brand new belt. Don't recall what brand. Maybe O'reilly house brand. I had a larger diameter idler. Tried that first. No help. I swapped it for a Dayco belt and it stopped.

Unfortunately it did not, but it was part of the issue. A slightly shorter Dayton belt did solve the issue eventually.

I did learn that serp belts do not use dressing.

Belt dressing is garbage. Spray glue band aide for poorly set up belt drives.

Another issue I was plagued with was a light bang on sharp turns with elevation changes, such as curbs, etc. I was finally able to get the car on the lift and examine suspension for damage again - earlier eyeballing showed nothing. This time I did note the oil pan had some decent gouges resulting from contact with the inner tie rod.

Only way currently I can see to stop this damage is by limiting the steering travel. A cpouple of 5/16 screwes into the lower control arm where the steering arm contacts it solved the banging but reduced inside corner tire angle from 31° to 25°, not good for Lisbon parking garages! Another solution will need to be found...

Default Update Fall 2023

Overall the car has been driving superb.

The belt issue is still a thing; after 4 months the 82" belt started to squeal again. I tried but could not get a 81.5" belt to fit. So fitted another brand of belt and once again it is quiet - for now.

Every so often when warm the engine would turn but not fire. This would last a minute then fire up. Mnnh. This now is getting more frequent so a quick scan with the BATF tool and Torque app show a few faults:

Current: P0521 - Oil pressure sensor error
Current: P06DA - Powertrain (oil pressure control circuit)
Historic: P127C - Powertrain (high pressure fuel rail sensor)

I will consult with the ECM tuner (Swap Time) and see what he says tomorrow.

Mitch at Swap Times notes that the ECM will start throwing out codes if the voltage drops below a certain level. This car does have a trunk mounted battery and he has seen issues with that even though the motor spins quick. I am keeping it on a trickle charger for now to keep the battery in top charge.

You can try to drop the height of the trans at the rear mount, that should help the pan contact. You would have to see what your range of pinion angle you have is, that might limit how low you can drop it.

On the low voltage thing, maybe try running the ECU power wire directly to the battery? Or try using a deep cycle or marine battery?

Unfortunately dropping the trans would be a 1:10 gain at best; 1" drop would gain 0.100" at the pan. I did notice a mention of this isue on another forum but for LS pans. Seems like Holley ignored the issue.

I will examine the connections later on the cables and such. A single 12 gauge wire straight from the battery may be what is needed. Ground will be examined also.

Yeah, if it's 1 to .10, that prob won't help enough. Is it a 71-72 centerlink and tie rods? If so, wonder if a 70 would clear. Kind of a costly route if it didnt work, but just a thought.

Other swap people had no suggestions?

What is the difference of the 70 and 71-72?

I note in period sales literature Pontiac says they made changes but not what...

I believe they corrected some geometry issue that improved performance, but know you have to match the idler and tie rods to the centerlink. And 71-72 are specific.

Nobody seems to make a 71-72 specific drag link, not even Ames.

I think I will ask OPH about this...

I recall them being different/specific, but maybe I'm mistaken. Maybe I'm thinking about F-bodies?

I thought they were bigger in diameter too.

This is what the 1971 brochure noted, though it could simply just be factory positive instead of negative caster.

Either way, either I will need to clearance the pan or raise the motor more - or both. I will need as tight a turn radius as I can get...

mnnnh, was not caster that had changed (still bias tires)

The specs for 1968 are:

0.25 degrees camber
-1.50 degrees caster
0.06 in total toe

1971 -1972 are:

0.00 Camber
-1.50 caster
0.13" total toe

so maybe the link s the same?

Well, my understanding is one is bigger in diameter than the other, but maybe in an attempt to consolidate replacement parts, it's all just listed as one now.

Pretty sure the tie rods are thicker too, I somehow remember once I got the wrong sleeves, and it wouldn't thread onto the tie rod ends.

Somehow I vaguely recall the idler might have been different too, but drawing strictly from memory at the moment, haven't had time to dig on this.

Roger (OPH) notes that the center link is the same but the tie rods were beefed up.

Ok, interesting, could have sworn the centerlink had options, but glad I now know, thank you.

I can correct my mental notes!

I have on my second gens noticed different brand center links and tie rod ends are all slightly different shape and thicknesses. even the "good" brands.
