Baltimore was also known to stamp the VIN on the passenger side rail or not at all.

Good to know, thanks.
I've looked pretty hard and not found one and the rust on top of the frame isn't that heavy. I'll look again after I blast it but have a feeling mine is one that didn't get stamped. The manufacturer of my frame was Parish and their markings on the side of the rear frame rail are pretty easy to see.

As you can see by the 140 mph speedometer, this set didn't come out of a '69 GTO. My car didn't have the rally gauge package from the factory but the person I bought the car from intended to upgrade gauges but never installed this set.

Here's the build sheet for the car btw:

Not sure whether I'll use this replacement set. I might opt for the Dakota Digital VHX system and save the original gauges that are still in the car now.
If you decide not to use the Rally gauges, let me know. Might be interested in taking it off your hands for my 70.

Getting ready to order a new wire harness and would need to consider the swap.

Some other frame locations the VIN has been found is the upper frame area under the drivers door. Mostly El Caminos, but they have a boxed in frame too.

Default Update

Things done since the last update:

1. Finished using wire wheel the top and sides of the frame, turned the frame over and finished the bottom as well. Ground off factory welding spatter on several places around the frame with a Roloc disc. It is ready for blasting.
2. Finished with the wire wheel on the rear axle. It is ready for blasting as well.
3. Removed the ball joints and bushings on the front control arms and all the bushings on the rear control arms.
4. Wire wheeled and scraped all the under coating off all the control arms. All are ready for blasting.
5. Cleaned up the mess!

Default Axle issue

Today I mostly cleaned up the shop and organized parts.
I decided to remove the axle bearings from the axles that I had on the floor. It was the last thing I hadn't dismantled.

Not good news. At some point in the past life of this car, the d/s axle bearing had seized and it scored the axle. The bearing was replaced anyway. Once I split and removed the retaining ring, the bearing was loose on the axle. It also appears to me that this got very hot when that bearing failed.
You can see the smaller diameter on the axle where the bearing sits. Strange looking pits too:

Pretty sure that even though the bearing hadn't failed on the p/s axle, the owner at the time decided to replace that bearing too. It was an identical part. The mechanic didn't do a great job as you can see the mark he made right in front of where the seal rides:

This axle is Ok to use though. But I can't in good conscience
use the other that had the seized bearing. I'd appreciate some advice here.
Look for a used original or buy a new aftermarket axle? Or replace both with new aftermarket axles? In all the cars I've had I've never had to replace an axle before so this is new territory for me.

I'm impressed with the speed of progress here! I replaced mine with new aftermarket axles because it was hard to find an original without a worn bearing seat.

Default Decisions

I just ordered a set of the Yukon axles that are 1541H Alloy.
Now I'm trying deciding on where to buy the rest of the parts I need for the rear.

I'm now thinking about going with 3.55 gears instead of using the stock 3.23. I think it will be a little bit better of a match with what my plans are.
I've already have a new Lunati 60902 cam and lifters that the seller gave me. I like the specs on this cam. SPECS
My tire diameter should be 27.5" and I'm planning on a 200-4R automatic and an Edelbrock Pro Flo 4 mpfi setup.
I calculate that a 3.55 rear would yield just a touch over 2,000 rpm at 70 mph. The 2.74 first gear would also give a 9.73 torque multiplication which I think would be good using a normal converter rather than a high stall.

I am also going to order an Auburn Gear posi carrier for it. I've had good luck with them. I'm also going try and find new Timken bearings for the pinion, carrier and axle bearings.

Another plus of going with 3.55’s is the availability of limited slip units. 3.23 units are not offered so you’d have to find a used unit

That was absolutely part of my decision when I saw the ratio break on these carriers. If I buy a posi carrier for the 3.23, I couldn't use it if those gears broke or just decided I'd rather have lower gears. Better to make the decision now and get the 3.55's and the 3.36 and numerically higher posi carrier.

I'm looking at the Dana SVL. It appears they have a very good reputation and are reasonably priced.

Yep, they only make replacement gears and posit units for the series 3 ratios which is 336 and up numerically. I always found that the 323 or the 308 is the perfect axle if you’re not going with an overdrive unit but if you’ve got that extra gearThen 355 or 390 is really nice

Looks like my link didn't work for the cam specs:

If you don’t have a good differential shop in town or if you have questions, I’m sure Jim Mitschke -JD Race/monzaz can point you in the right direction. Those last two are his shop name and PY Forums user name. He has an eBay store too. Also there’s Ol Pinion Head on here, he knows more about these rears than just about anyone. Search for him here on PY Forums.

Thanks. Good to know.
I've been using a local guy that has done a great job for me in the past. I think he was the top rear end guy at a dealership before he retired. It's been about 5 or 6 years since I had one set up so I hope he is still able to do it. I'll call him soon.

FWIW...Auburn Gear sells their HP and Pro series limited differentials in a 3.23. Eaton however, not.

I have this cam in my '68. It's got a TH400 and 3.55s, a Continental 13" stall, #16 heads and dished pistons. Runs about 3k at 70mph. I've often thought about putting a 700R4 in it. It's really docile around town, but it will wake up when you get on it. I still have to watch the timing on 91 octane, it will still ping a little if I get on it in the Summer unless I dial it back a few degrees or mix it with 100. Wasn't a problem with the Crower I had in it before, but I think this cam has more dynamic compression.

Cool and good to know.
My block has been bored 40 over and the seller provided me new pistons and rings that are ready for assembly except for the final cylinder hone. They are dished Keith Black 346.
I'm not familiar with these engines a lot so I don't know how #16 heads compare with the stock 350HP heads I have. The seller had those redone and ready for installing and figure with the dished pistons it would be about 9.0 to 1 compression.
91 octane is the best I can get where I live but it will be easy for me to control the timing as I'm planning on installing an Edelbrock Pro Flo 4 mpfi setup.

Sounds like a similar setup to mine except I'm running a '68 Quadrajet. My block is .040 over too. I think my compression is around 9.5:1 with the pistons I have. No matter the casting number, stock 4bbl D-port GTO heads for '68/'69 are all 72cc.

#16 heads are the standard 350hp heads, most are 72cc ... I think some people report theirs as somewhat more, mine cc'ed to 72. And very similar setup to mine also, I'm .040 over, about .005 in the hole, 7cc dish in the pistons, 068 cam, 1971 Q-jet carb. Runs like a top sitting in the chassis, haven't had it on the road yet.

I made the mistake of buying the Lunati 6902 in 10510702LK kit form which included their 951 lifters. After all the pain and suffering, I ended up matching it with Sealed Powers 951R with the C clip.
