Default PC question

So i have an ASUS tower that I use and it has windows 8 on it ...I want to upgrade to windows 10 or 11 so i can use Turbo tax as it does'nt support windows 8 anymore.
Can I upgrade to windows 10 or 11 with the system I have or how else can I find out?????
Or upgrade the tower I've seen stuff at best buy for like $300...with windows 10pro on it...

You may want to upgrade your RAM to 8 GB or more. Processor should be fine. How big is your hard drive?

Definitely won't run eleven but will likely run ten but more ram would be advised.

Ten is only supported until 2025 however.

Ok I'll check the hard drive size so windows 11 is the smarter move and more ram....I'll look into it....

There are many things you can do with a 11 box to make it Run like your 8. And be way less invasive.
If you get a new box. Before you open it, look at some videos on you tube about starting it WITHOUT a MICROSOFT " account" .
You dont need a Microsoft account and if you just turn it on and create one, you'll be married to a lot of your data stored elsewhere, and " package" software crap you don't need.
There are free alternatives to Microsoft office too.
10 and 11 run on " aps" like a phone, Not programs. Microsoft builds them so they are interdependent, as does Google. If you don't create an account you will retain much more control over this hungry for data monster.

That's way too small. I would look for a 1 TB or larger hard drive. Just make sure you keep the same type as your old hard drive if you want to do a direct replacement. I would assume it is a SATA drive.

When I changed from 8 to 10, there was a program windows ran to see it the computer was able to be upgraded?
I image it is still that way. My computer can not be upgraded to 11.

The upgrade is pretty huge program I think.
It was also free at that time for me.
(don't know if it still is though, was a few years ago)

Chris,

I recently used Turbo Tax here with Windows 7. Had no problems at all.

Did have to log on using Google Chrome.

It should be satisfactory for the w10 upgrade however general browsing may be slower as you only have 4GB RAM.

You could upgrade RAM but I wouldn't throw good money at something at old.

If you sign in with your outlook/hotmail/msn (Microsoft) account it will retain your settings from computer to computer to make the migration easier. Also, you can earn Bing points that you can buy real stuff with. The browser also gives flree coupon codes when you shop online (amazon etc).

The Microsoft account also connects to OneDrive which is the cloud repository. You can safely store data there in case yer house burns down or your old hard drive gives up the ghost. If I lost junior's baby pictures I wouldn't be writing this note.

You are technically supposed to purchase w10 since you missed the "flree upgrade window" however for some reason it still doesn't ask for a paid key if you are upgrading from W7 or W8 with a paid-for key.

Alternatively, there has never been a better time to purchase a new unit - they are starving since the post voivod boom...lol

Good luck!

I've used Turbo Tax online for probably the last ten years. Just finished our return on 3/4, expecting the refund 3/25. About as painless it gets. But does cost about $150 to file both federal and state returns.
Yep, no software, just create an account and it takes you through the process step by step. Never had a single problem with them.
