Just wondering if this pic represents original seat comfort weave or some off-brand reproduction?

Pic is too small. If the pattern is in straight rows, it's repop. If the pattern is staggered, it's real. If you stretch real Comfortweave, you'll see holes.

This pic shows real Comfortweave along with Legendary, and PUI repops from within the past year. The main difference betweeb Legendary and PUI is the gloss. Legendary looks as if it has Armourall on it, PUI looks natural. Otherwise the vinyl material is the same weight.

With Parchment color, the repop is more yellow/creamy overall than original. Original is almost white with a gold pearl effect.

Thanks for the info. I attached another pic. Looks staggered to me but the material doesn't look like a mesh as shown in your pics. Looks more like vinyl with holes in it.

Does reproduction material today actually have holes that you can push a pin through? That was how I always could tell original from repop.

No I don't think so. its patterned but not perforated.

I agree.
Definitely not original comfort weave.

Sometimes the rear seat will still be original , and just the fronts recovered.
Could check for that on the specimen car.

Thanks, rear are same style. I've only seen real comfortweave in the flesh once I think (on a toyswedo car).

Certain Corvette interiors used comfort weave also..
I think 69 70 71 72 if they didn't spring for leather.

If you contact SMS Auto Fabrics, they will send you a sample of real comfort weave. If they have any left. When I did my 71 GTO interior they were the only place that had the original material. Legendary was close, but you could tell the slight difference when the samples were side by side.

the real is a weaved material.

The best repop is a pressed(?)pattern which resembles a weave, but (iirc) does not breathe.

I believe that in 1972 the "comfort weave" material changed from the original to a perforated vinyl - but I could be wrong.

I believe that one time when I was at SMS, I was told that the original/correct stuff was so hard to get, was because it was only made at one plant, and that plant burned down decades ago.

Comfortweave inserts were used for several years in several models beginning w mid '68 models.
- mid '68-71 Deluxe interior Birds
-'70 & 71 LeMans Sports/ GT0
-'69 -71 GP
-as mentioned prev, several years of C3 Vettes.

Have owned quite a few original comfortweave interior Pontiacs. The only originally installed "fake" comfort weave inserts that I've run across were in '70 Firebirds (two black interior Formulas & several sandalwood interior Formulas & Esprits. bought as parts & project cars in the late 80's & early to mid 90's, these were definitely original installed trim pieces. I still have several '70 original black fake comfort weave seat sections. In bright blue for '70, I believe, one received real comfort weave. Have a pair of original upper door panels in that color that have real comfort weave inserts.

Not a ' 72 thing for comfort weave in any Pontiac, have owned over 2 dozen '71 Pontiacs with original comforweave insert buckets & strato benches & all of them had/have real comfort weave inserts.

The story that was told to me near 30 years ago from PUI on real comfort weave, is the supplier in Japan had the comfort weave mfg equip destroyed in the Kyoto(sp) earthquake. in the early 90's PUI actually offered real comfort weave in a few colors in several reproduction seat covers. Since that time,must been chase nos comfort weave material & have new seat covers made w it.

I not so long ago purchased several yards of 1969 blue deluxe comfort weave through SMS for our 69 Firebird. We made a correct complete front bench seat and fold down rear seat, rear 1/4 w/arm rests as well. Material was spot on. When requesting samples they sent me three, one was correct so that is what I ordered and of course they sent me the wrong material TWICE ! They were very slow to full fill the order each time but in the end I had what I needed.

I had something that resembled this in my '75 Trans Am. Either way, it doesn't look as if it truly belongs in a '70-'72

By the looks of the door panels the car is a 70. The seat pattern resembles a 70, but that is not 70 comfort weave material. Here's a picture of a 70 & 71 comfort weave. In 72 I think they just went to a straight vinyl. Seats are a little used up, but you get the idea.
