Default A body frame

I have a 1972 gto that I have been using as a parts car. Haven't totally cannibalized it, now I might want to restore it but the frame is rusted really bad.I was wondering if a frame from a Skylark,Cutlass or Chevelle are the same? Would make it easier to find one if they are. Thanks.

Yes, the frames from 2 door hardtops and post coupes from A-body Chevy, Olds and Buick 68-72 would fit your 72 GTO. 68 frames have some minor cosmetic differences in the engine cross member but are dimensionally the same and will work. A 68 frame I once possessed also had a minor difference where the rear brake hose passes through the cross brace but it can be made to work with minor modification.

The rear side rails are contoured differently on '68 & 69 A-body 2 door frames than they are on '70-72 A-body frames. This is in the forward area coming down the rear axle arch. If the A-body is a very high value car, it would be wise, not o mix up styles of frames. FWIW, many years ago I was made aware of a born with original drivetrain '69 RA4 Judge that was restored, to a very high level I might add. The frame that was used was a 71 Skylark frame... The reason the original frame was swapped was due to the original passenger side frame rail being rust pitted. The entire frame issue could have been handled differently.

Agree with Ol Pinion Head! I forgot that part about the side rail contours.
