Default VIN stamp on 66 4 speed?

It recently occurred to me that I don't know if Pontiac stamped a partial VIN on a 4 speed in a 66 GTO. I know there is no VIN on the engine, but what about the transmission? I have a 66 GTO convertible that my parents bought new. In 1979, my dad dropped the driveshaft at 100 mph and broke the trans case, so I can't verify by looking at my car.

Thanks in advance,
Importsmasher

FWIW, I had a Muncie from a 67 GTO with a vin stamp....and no vin stamp on 67 engines either.

Seems to me the last 6 digits if the VIN were stamped into the Muncie case ('66 Goat). Been awhile since I had the car up on a lift so I'm going by memory (or what's left of it)

My 66 GTO had the partial VIN stamped, it was on the top of the driver side mounting ear. It was a Baltimore built car. Back in the day, stolen 4 speed transmissions was a problem. They are easy and quickly removed. I just assumed that is why the trans had it and not the engine didn't???

Thanks for the replies! I always assumed that they were stamped, but the other day I saw a post in regards to a 67 camaro, and someone said they didn't stamp them, so it got me wondering.

Thanks,
