Default 1967 GTO Rear shock absorber length

I am replacing the concours correct spiral gray shocks with new Monroe OE Spectrum shocks. The spiral shocks may be fine for show, but I wanted something better for actually driving the car. The Monroe shocks fit fine in the front but the rears are shorter by about 1" or so as compared to the spirals. However there is another hole in the lower body mount that these would fit into. It is about 1" above the hole that the spirals mount to. Were there two mounting positions for the rear shocks? Maybe one for standard shocks and one for heavy duty? This is odd that Monroe would make one shock and it would be too short to fit in the proper mounting hole. I did not see another rear shock in the Monroe catalog. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

this is what I am talking about. The two holes for the rear shock. The concours correct one fits in the lower hole but the Monroe could fit in the upper. Which is correct?

The 1967 Assembly Manual says the lower hole is correct.

Thanks for looking this up for me. My problem is that the front Monroe shocks fit perfectly but the Monroe rears are 21" long and the spirals shocks are 22.5" long. I triple checked the part number to make sure Monroe set the correct shocks, which they did.

Question: So what was the upper hole used for? Is there any rationale for it?

The upper hole was likely put there to accommodate a couple different shock lengths like you’ve discovered.

Use the upper hole for your shorter shocks, it’s probably about 1-1/2” higher than the bottom hole.

Not sure why full extension is much of a consideration. To
get there under driving conditions requires a considerable
amount of body separation. Like going over a rise at speed.

Also, upper hole won't work so good. At least not without
some geometry correction. It's located on a surface which
has another angle. Look at gto4ben's image. Shock mount
will tilted upward anywhere from 15-30 degrees?

I say just run the "short" shocks.

Upper hole is for the Superlift mounting bracket.

I'd like to make those brackets (9776474 RH, 9776475 LH). Anyone have the dimensions?

Thanks. that explains a lot as to why the upper hole is there. I mounted the shorter shocks to the lower hole. thanks everyone for your input.
