Default The Road to Do-Over

I waited a week for the rain to stop and the dewpoint to drop so I could paint my steering column.

I ended up with a wrinkled mess and am now on the road to Do-Over, USA, which is a well-traveled highway in my garage.

I don't know anything about the paint chemistry (pic attached). I tested on a light primer and it looked too flat and too light, so I decided to spray it on top of a gloss black enamel, which did darken the color.

How do I avoid this next time?

Did this happen because the aerosol didn't like the gloss enamel or because I sprayed in multiple passes instead of one heavy coat?

Because the color is metallic, I heard it would look wrong if I did it in multiple coats, so was trying to keep it wet with a few multiple passes in quick succession.

It looks like the paint was lacquer and lifted the primer you used. Lacquer and enamels don't play well together. You will need an epoxy primer if that is the case.

Thanks SR-71.

I appreciate the info.

I do have some black epoxy primer, so I'll use that on the next attempt.

I forget the rule .... lacquer over enamel ok, enamel over lacquer not ok ... or could be the other way around.

I know I've used lacquer over cured enamel ... .I think, with no problem, usually on random parts, not important stuff like interior parts.

It is the other way around - enamel over lacquer - ok

Yep, that's got to be it, seems like we used to use tons of lacquer based primer with enamel over it.

I did that on my Ram Air pan that I painted, was on the second coat and it went all wrinkly on me. Had to wait till it dried, stripe it all down and paint again. Such a pain!!!
