Default Spray on bedliner in place of vinyl top?

It isn't on my Pontiac, but it is an idea I have for my '74 Cutlass Supreme. When I go to "replace" the half vinyl top again, I am considering getting "Line X" or come other spray on bedliner put on the roof instead of the vinyl. Have any of you ever done something like this, and If you have, do you have any pictures?? Just an idea, any input would be appreciated.

A local guy has a '50's Chevy pickup that is painted in Bed liner.

I think your car will look terrible if you try to replace a vinyl roof with that.

Something similar was an alternative to a vinyl top back in the 60's. It was popular for a while. Then entrepreneurs learned they could duplicate the factory vinyl tops for a reasonable price. Then all of a sudden the 'spray on' vinyl tops went away.

They used to make a spray paint type application to cover bald spots.

I vote YES, and embed 500 Susan B. Anthony dollar coins in it before it dries

Sounds like a good idea in theory ... like Hydrogen dirigibles.

I own (3) pickups with spray-in bedliner. It's great on them.

But.....it starts out glossy and very black, Then after it cures and weathers a bit, it turns to a dull dark gray. Fine in a truck bed but probably disturbing on a car roof.

If you do a search you will come up with several full body applications that have been done. Mainly trucks but it would give you an idea of appearance.
I was playing with the idea of spraying some inner wheel tubes with the Red liner to "recreate" the plastic liner look, but never did so.
If applied correctly the liner does have a decent look but I don't think it would be close enough texture to give the same clean look as a vinyl roof covering.
So if your thinking about it you may want to shoot a few sample panels before fully committing.

If your trying to save money it would cost more than a top and not look very good. I've done rocker spray on pick-up roof that looks good on older style trucks. Just curious why you want to rust or something different ?

I sprayed the bottom of my car with truck bed liner (I live on a gravel road and have no plans to move!), and while it turned out great and will protect against rocks and debris, it really wouldn't look nice on a roof. I don't believe it has UV protection like paint and as Eric said it would likely fade to a dull gray and not look great.

My opinion is that you wouldn't like it (turns chalky over time) and it is difficult to remove. If you don't want vinyl why not do a painted top??

Thanks for the feedback. After thinking about it, I have decided against it as well. I was just thinking that I wouldn't have to replace the top as often (I do it every 5 years or so), but that may not happen as often now that i have eliminated the main problem at it's source (the sun and rain) by installing a carport. I keep the Pontiac in the garage, but this car has sit in the weather (although I drive it a lot, so it doesn't stay wet). The sun has been the main enemy of it. And you are right, I have seen bedliners get dull looking, and they cant be "shined up" like a vinyl top with vinyl treatment.

Just looking for something I don't have to replace every few years, but I would rather replace it once in a while than to have something that doesn't look good, and after thinking about it, i don't think it would look right either. just something i was brainstorming on. Fortunately, I always weigh pros and cons, and try and get as much feedback (like on here for instance)as I can when I come up with ideas like this. Thanks again for the opinions.

If it sits outside and you have to replace it every five years, why not spend the money to eliminate the vinyl all together? Paint the roof and be done with it.
Nice Olds, by the way.
