I equipped my 57 GMC (with from the factory 347" Pontiac V8) with a junkyard HEI from a '77 400 Pontiac. I've seen HEI caps at car shows that have the connections re-routed internally so that the plug wire connections point directly at the plugs, eliminating the "can of worms" effect near the distributor.

Some have referred to these as "crossfire" caps, but my Google searching for "crossfire HEI cap" has yielded nothing but specs for regular caps.

Three questions:
1. Does anyone know the correct name for these caps? Maybe the manufacturer's name?

2. Does a Chebbie HEI cap interchange with a '77 Pontiac HEI cap?

3. This engine is NEVER spun over 4000 RPM. Anyone heard of any problems with these caps in daily driver use?

The standard Chevy and Pontiac caps are the same.
The one you're talking about probably wouldn't be.
The Pontiac rotates Counter-Clockwise.
That cap is probably wired for the Chevy rotation - clockwise.

Never thought of that, but you are right. I'd have to be sure the cap was Pontiac specific. Thanks for keeping me from stepping in a hole.

The crossfire caps(terrible name for an ign. product,Great name for my 2genF exhaust sys)were marketed bythe Magazine writer David Vizard and some other folks . I used to see them @ swap meets. They definately DID work on Pontiacs.you just had to think a little harder to wire them up!

FWIW: If you face #1 on the cap at 12 o'clock facing the firewall. You will have less spark plug wire crossing over each other. Plus easier to R & R as it is at the exact location every time without guessing if it's off one tooth or not.

Thats a great tip, I never realized that.

I always admired my LT1 cap as it is this criss-cross design also. I did not know anyone made a cap like this for the HEI, does anyone make one for a points distributor?

I have kept 8 - 1 across the firewall* soo long that I thoughts we all did that.

*NOTE: only 2 & 3 are crossing the middle.
After some thoughs here, I think it'sa non-product for Poncho.
