Can the stock height valve covers still be used since the screw in studs are taller ?

One could always use a thicker gasket if using screw-in studs and polylock nuts.

I did exactly that with my 1964 9770716 heads with ARP studs and Crower stainless Enduro roller rockers using stock 1964 GTO valve covers.

You used to be able to buy 1/2 bottom and 7/16 top studs with no hex to save machining the head for the shouldered studs.Have not looked into them for years.Tom

Got the 62, 11B block to the machine shop. They checked the bores and noted it wasn't standard as was represented to me when purchased. Looks to have been previously bored over 40. It will now have to be bored for a 30 over 400. Fortunately the sonic testing revealed there was plenty of meat to do so.......which surprised us. He said it was the thickest Pontiac block he had seen in years.

Yep, I was sweating bullets when he first checked the bores and said that it was already bored 40 over plus some additional wear. I've had to scrap blocks in the past and these 11B blocks are somewhat difficult to find. Going to do a 4" stroke which will result in 432 cubic inches. Pistons will have to dished to get a reasonable compression ratio for 93 octane. Given the performance limitations of the 177 heads even after some work, camshaft selection will be critical. Perhaps something just slightly stouter than the 068. Will be asking for more recommendations when I get further down the road. I appreciate everyone's input.

Ok, as often happens, the build is changing. have ordered a Molnar 4.25 stoker crank and rods along with Ross pistons for the build. Will be right at 460 cubic inches. Heads will be KRE 85 cc d ports which will net me about 10.4 or so compression. I will be using 1962 long branch exhaust manifolds. Plan on using their aluminum tri power intake. Time for a cam choice and interested in opinions. Car will be driven a couple thousand miles/year. 3.42 gears. Was thinking Butler's roller version of the 041 cam. Any thoughts?

I think you might have a tad of crankcase grinding in your future to get a 4.250” crank into a 389 block.

Something in the realm of a 041 should work well pumping through exhaust manifolds.
