Default '69 GTO roof rust (vinyl top)

I have a very original, unmolested '69 GTO hardtop project. I peeled back a portion of the vinyl top to find that there are some serious rust holes in several spots. I'm not finding any venders that list a repro roof top skin. Anyone aware of someone that makes one? How have you guys dealt with this problem on your ex-vinyl top rusty roof GTO's/LeMans?

I'd get a donor roof or section. There should be plenty of cars in yard or being parted you could get some sheetmetal off locally. You can easily patch up your car with the right section.

Have been through the problem you have with rust holes under the vinyl covering. Donor roof if the best method of repair. The most difficult part with a donor roof is separating the outer sheet metal from the inner structure. Takes time and patience. The last one I replaced, never removed the headliner. Was able to fit and weld on the replacement sheet metal. However it took a week to complete with most of the time in removing the inner structure from the replacement roof sheet metal.

Both my GTOs have had this problem. The '68 I'm doing now has a bit of rust holes in the top only, I'm thinking of just making a patch since I really don't want to use a roof section from another car. Hard to find roof sections around here it seems.

The Parts Industries lists a roof panel for 68 GTO for 415.00 or a repair panel for 285.00.I have never seen one or have any info on them. Just passing the info along. 1-800-445-8163.

Thanks for the input guys. Although here in the Northwest, the climate is not too bad for rust, I'm sure that when I peel the rest of the vinyl off, I'm going to find I need a whole top skin. Any donor cars I've found, have some rust issues too, usually around the rear glass.
Perhaps I might just put it on the market & let it be someone else's project.

With new or donor repair panels available, rust around back glass is not the terrible issue it used to be. Its not an easy fix, but not as bad as it once was. Replacing entire top is really not a big deal and is probaly best fix. If you have got a solid unmolested car with some rust on top, I would go with it. Chances are you won't find anything better, and most likely, will be worst. I have found in my own experience that rust high up on car is much easier to do quality repair on than lower rust such as floorpans, bottom of doors, and rockers.

I've noticed that Fremont built cars had almost no paint on the roof when Cordova top equipped, this does not seem to be the case with other plants.

I had the same issue with my '68....Everything else was much too nice to toss just for the sake of the roof...so I patched it. I happened across an ebay auction for an entire roof in Nevada. I was the only bidder. I told the guy where to cut and he could have the rest. Worked out well...BUT- if I had it to do again, I probably would have just replaced the entire roof.

Greg, Remember when my roof was damaged during shipping about a year ago? The damage is worst than the images show, but not near as bad as yours. Your repair looks great. Are you going to go with a vinyl top? While mine was undergoing repairs I figured it would need a top when finished, but I was wrong. Again, your top repair looks great. Can't see why someone would pass on an otherwise solid car because of some roof repair.

And this one was a Fremont build too.

I don't think any of them got more than overspray on the roof when equipped with vinyl.
Mine was an Arlington car, spent it's whole life in GA and you can see the results.

Mike,
I've been told that if I don't go with vinyl, the repairs will surely show...so yeah, that's the plan.
